140 x 85 mm (5œ x 3Œ pouces).
An attractive collection of 23 erotic postcards from the beginning of the twentieth century. These all feature young women in erotic poses in various states of undress (including nudes), including Jean Agélou - one of the most famous pin ups from the 1910's. Nearly all of the postcards / photo-cards are from the period 1900-1915. Only one is dated (1904). There is one later card, sent from Algeria, which was dated 1935. A few of the cards have writing on the rear. They all seem to have been sent to French soldiers. Perhaps no surprise. The cards are generally clean and tidy, with a few creases here and there. The fall into the category of Risque, or erotica, not pornography. 140 by 85mm (5œ by 3Œ inches). .

Anhée Wallonia, Belgium Abbaye de Maradsous 1885
First edition. Complete. A collection of 20 large albumen photographs laid onto backing card with description of each printed to the bottom edge, showing the Abbaye de Maredsous and the Ecole Abbataile. These are held in a red clamshell box with black and gilt decoration, crest and titles. The box has significant fading / spotting from damp, but is still holding well, and has done its job of protecting the photographs inside. The photographs are of high quality, and show the building of the abbey and the new school there. They are dated by the fact that the school was founded in 1881 (earliest date) and that the the Abbey was completed in 1892, but in these images is still some way off completion. Interesting architectural prints, but also of the students and staff at the school, both being educated and relaxing. A very nice collection. Images are mostly 17cm x 24cm and backing cards are 25cm x 32cm. Box is 35cm x 27cm.
220 x 310 mm
A hardback album, covered in cloth / sewn on. The first leaf holds a printed invitation to a woodland ride in Blois (on the banks of the Loire). Then follow 57 pages of lovely water colours, onto which are pasted a large collection of monograms, crowns and small illustrations thus integrated into the drawings (fleur-de-lys, frames, vases, etc.). Some coats of arms. A couple of the pages are dated between 1865 and 1879. Most of the leaves are painted to one side only. The final few are painted to both sides. The water colours are executed beautifully, with a high degree of skill. The monograms are often labelled in a neat hand. They include a large number of the nobility of France and the United Kingdom. Dukes, counts and other dignitaries. (Such as the Duke of Waterford, Viscount Grandville). There are also some monograms for Chateaux, schools and hospitals. Although anonymous, the album is obviously created by a Catholic Royalist and was created in that turbulent period of invasion, war, revolution and commune. Covers are clean, but somewhat darkened. The binding is a little shaken, but holding. The pages are mainly in good condition, with a few foxing spots. 8 of the pages have a small amount of edgewear (appears to be mouse eaten?). Overall though a beautiful object. 54 unpaginated leaves. A few look to have been bound in afterwards. All edges gilt. 220 by 310mm (8٠by 12Πinches). .

London: J. J. Stockdale, 41 Pall Mall, 1813-1816
First Edition. Four Volumes (complete). Recent half leather with gilt titles in six bands, with original boards. All issued. The Advocate was subsumed into the "Anti-Jacobin Review" in 1816. A Protestant / Anti-Catholic periodical with contributions from Shute Bishop of Durham, George Isaac Huntingford Bishop of Gloucester, George Tomline Bishop of Lincoln, Tomas Burgess Bishop of St. David's, George Canning, Granville Sharp, John Coxe, among others. The spines are new, and are in excellent clean and tidy condition. The boards are a little rubbed and darkened, but are still in sound shape. Internally the four volumes are in excellent condition. Clean and tidy, with very slight darkening only. Owner's monogrammed initials to each volume. A little light creasing to vol. 3. Overall, an excellent example. vi, [errata], 1-668., iv, 1-570., iv, 1-572., vii, 1-472. pp. Copac cites only two copies of the complete work, in the Cambridge Special Collections, and at Chetham's library, Manchester. This copy belonged to Gilbert Buchanan, and has his initials in the front of the volumes. Buchanan was a Church of England clergyman, who was one of the contributors to the Advocate (and the Gentleman's Magazine) under the pen name "Clericus Surriensis". An Anglo-American, he had left America during the Revolutionary War, and had become a clergyman. He spent much time collating copies of the Book of Common Prayer with that held at the Tower (the "Authorized Standard"). He was eventually involved in publishing a corrected edition. The letter contributed by him here has been lightly annotated and corrected in his hand, and signed by him.
London: Burns and Lambert 1854
First Edition. Pamphlet. 8vo. Title page slightly darkened with a small closed tear and a couple of ink spots to the margin. Otherwise a clean copy. Recent paper wrappers. In 1853, Mr Chambers was given leave by parliament to introduce a bill to the Commons. The premise of the bill ('A bill to facilitate personal liberty in certain cases') gave wide access to a panel of commissioners to enter Roman Catholic convents with the aim of securing the freedom of those held there against their will. Catholics viewed this as a scurrilous anti-Catholic attack, and denied that any nuns were prisoners. They viewed the legislation as a reaction to the recent restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in England and Wales. The list of signatories to the rear begins with the Lords, whose names are led by Charles H Clifford & Francis Stonor.
London John Norton for Joyce Norton 1633
A nice copy of this two volume work, unfortunately lacking the title page to Volume I. The volume starts on gather A. Original full leather boards, with a touch of bumping / edgewear to the boards. Recent spine with titles and date to the spine. There is a little water staining to the work, particularly to the edges, and a slight nicking to the edges of the blank front end paper. Some darkening / foxing, again particularly to the edges. Owner's inscriptions to the inside front board and to the 2nd end paper. (IWe think what is laid in as the first end paper is a later addition, when the spine was replaced - the second end paper appears from condition and inscriptions to be the original one). Also lacking is leaf 3I2 (page 99/100) with the text here also lacking. Bizarrely, a full page plate, dating from 1814 has been laid in to face page 275. This is an engraving by Wm Craig and L. Brown, showing national liberty crushing the nations of Europe. This is perhaps laid in here as it is opposite an homily against Disobedience and Wilfull rebellion. This long homily, published in various forms, is important, as it was part of the celebrations following the failure of the rebellions against Queen Elizabeth I. To the end of the work is "A thankesgiving for the suppression of the last rebellion." 1-98, [vi], 1-98 101-320 [iv]. 290 x 210 mm (11œ x 8Œ inches).
Manchester: J. Gleave 1813 Joseph Gleave, 1773-1828, was born in Tabley, Cheshire. He was a bookseller and printer, particularly interested in promoting Sunday Schools. The business was taken over in 1828 by his youngest son, also called Joseph. An early Manchester imprint, Manchester was a small town until Arkwright opened the Cotton Mill in 1780. From around 1800, Manchester grew at an astonishing rate, becoming a city in 1835.
Contemporary full leather binding, with blind stamped decoration to the spine and boards. Frontispiece. Lovely engraving of "The Royal Psalmist" facing the psalms. Unpaginated. An attractive copy of an early Manchester printing.
