Saul Leiter has been digging in his archive and selected 34 unpublished color photographs for his fourth solo exhibition at Roger Szmulewicz's GALLERY FIFTY ONE, in Antwerp. The lyricism and intensity of his vision come into fullest play in his eloquent handling of color: to the rapid recording of the spontaneous unfolding of life on the street, Leiter adds an unconventional sense of form and a brilliantly improvisational, and frequently almost abstract, use of found colors and tones. Leiter?s visual language of fragmentation, ambiguity and contingency is evoked in Saul Leiter: Early Color by one hundred subtle, painterly images that stretched the boundaries of photography in the second half of the twentieth-century.

In the annals of photographic history, there exist visionaries who have graced the world with their artistic prowess, capturing beauty, emotions, and moments that resonate with our souls. And then, there are those like Marcel de Baer, a man who navigated life?s starkly utilitarian landscapes with an extraordinary blend of precision and indifference. Within the pages of this small book, we embark on a journey into the enigmatic world of Marcel de Baer, a man who never aspired to be a photographer but, in the line of duty, became an inadvertent chronicler of life?s most somber moments. Marcel de Baer?s story unfolds within the solemn corridors of justice, where he stood as an expert witness for the public prosecutor. His domain was far removed from the charming streets of artistic Paris or the grandeur of exotic landscapes; instead, it was the gritty aftermath of automobile collisions in rural Belgium. As the sentinel of the law, he would promptly arrive at the scenes of major traffic accidents, meticulously documenting what had transpired through the lens of his camera, precise measurements, and technical drawings. His duty was not to craft visual poetry but to distill the stark facts into a narrative comprehensible to judges and juries. With a clinical eye, he faithfully discharged his responsibilities, capturing the aftermath of chaos.

In this 2nd volume on cactus derivatives and plant drawings, Dirk Zoete continues his imaginary botanical journey. While some shapes and forms are reminiscent of the first part of this series, the use of color is notably different, with some shades appearing more intense. Zoete also focuses more on the background, creating an even more dreamlike universe, with a sense of depth and dimensionality that feels like an extra sensory playground.

We Belgians are used to seeing people have fun, get drunk, dance or do whatever else they please in this temple of emotions. To sober outsiders, caf s are an enigmatic territory, where a miracle potion is served. It's Harry instead of Asterix chez les Belges. In all likelihood, the photographer had to leave his comfort zone to better understand it. Taking a step back to see the bigger picture. Leaving to arrive. It's ironic that no other Belgian was able to preserve this culture as brilliantly as Gruyaert. I used the word preserve on purpose. Unlinke wine, beer is not stored. It is consumed as soon as possible. Perhaps that's why beer drinkers are so impatient when they're thirsty."

This new body of work by Dirk Zoete has particularly seduced me, as the vegetal world?and flowers in particular?appeals to me a lot. It delights me to bundle this work in a FIFTY ONE Publication. Dirk has created these imaginary botanical creatures that he clusters into ?cactus derivatives.? One can discern characters, phalluses, female genitals, fairground amusements, and so much more in these genuine shapes, depending on one?s mindset. Or could we read them as his own ?fleurs du mal??

This series of extremely touching, candid, sensual and delicate nudes of Leiter?s friends and lovers ? Jay, Fay, Barbara and his great love, Soames ? show us how the artist succeeded in balancing between eroticism and something close to the distinct dreamy atmosphere that characterizes his colour work.

This catalogue was first published in 2011, on the occasion of his third solo show at GALLERY FIFTY ONE. Two years before he passed away on November 26th 2013. The second edition is in loving memory of Saul.
