‎Paris, Robert Estienne, 1540.‎

Bel exemplaire. /// In-4 de 115, (13) pp., [a4, b-h8, i4] Vélin. (Reliure de l'époque.) //// First edition. The work was published to justify the alliance of King François Ier with the Turks. Christophe Richer (Thorigny, 1513-1553) was secretary of the chancellor Poyet and valet de chambre of François I, who sent him on a mission to Constantinople. In July 1538, he attended the Aigues-Mortes meeting between François I and Charles V, where he met François Rabelais and the Languedoc humanist Antoine Arlier. He was linked to Clément Marot, Étienne Dolet and Jean Voulté. "Perhaps the most original contribution of the work is his, or his informant's, interest in the languages spoken in Turkey, and a constant attempt to give the sound of the Turkish names for everything... There is no hint of Christian imprecation of the Infidel, and the unprejudiced observer accumulates examples to support his assertions that the Turks are a scrupulously clean and honest people." (Rouillard). Printed in Roman letters, engraved Estienne's olive tree device on the title page, large criblé initials. At the end of the book, the printing is dated March 3, 1540. Very nice copy. Mortimer, Harvard 458. Adams R-514. USTC 182393. /// PLUS DE PHOTOS SUR WWW.LATUDE.NET‎
