Savoy (London), Printed by Tho. Newcomb sold by Robert Boulter, 1679. Folio (370 x 245 mm). In contemporary full calf with six raised bands. Wear to extremities, corners bumped with loss of leather. Internally nice and clean. (18), 1123 pp. + frontispiece (lacking last 15 pp.).
Rare first edition of the second collected folio of Reynolds works, according to Lowndes: “The best folio edition”. Reynolds was highly regarded as a preacher. “Many prized his written sermons and religious treatises. Collections of his works were first published in 1658 and 1679, followed by a complete six-volume edition in 1826.” (Beeke & Pedersen, Meet the Puritans) Edward Reynolds, bishop of Norwich, was born in Southampton in 1599. He was educated at Merton College, Oxford, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1618. He became a fellow in 1620, due to his ability in Greek, debate, and oratory. Later, he received a Master of Arts degree (1624) and a Doctor of Divinity degree (1648) from Cambridge. “Reynolds was chosen dean of Christ Church College (1648-51, 1659) and vice-chancellor of the university (1648-50). From 1657 to 1661, he served as vicar of St. Lawrence Jewry, so he was again heard in London. After Cromwell’s death in 1658, Reynolds became a leader of the Presbyterian clergy. He preached to Richard Cromwell’s Parliament several times in 1659 and 1660, counseling that radical political and doctrinal opinions be suppressed but that differences on secondary issues be tolerated. At the Restoration, he and Edmund Calamy were appointed chaplains to the king.” (Beeke & Pedersen, Meet the Puritans). Lowndes IV, p. 2077.

(London, Harrison and Sons, 1879). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from ""Philosophical Transactions"" 1879 - Vol. 170 - Part II. Pp. 727-845 and 3 plates. The plates slightly brownspotted, otehrwise fine and clean.
First printing of this classic paper on ""thermal respiration"" in which Reynolds explains how some of the movements of the vanes in Crookes' Radiometer can be accounted for. ""The correct solution to the problem (the problem of finding the cause of the movement of the vanes in Crooke's radiometer) was provided qualitatively by Osborne Reynolds, better remembered for the ""Reynolds number"". Early in 1879 Reynolds submitted a paper to the Royal Society in which he considered what he called ""thermal transpiration"", and also discussed the theory of the radiometer. By ""thermal transpiration"", Reynolds meant the flow of gas through porous plates caused by a temperature difference on the two sides of the plates. If the gas is initially at the same pressure on the two sides, it flows from the colder to the hotter side, resulting in a higher pressure on the hotter side if the plates cannot move. Equilibrium is reached when the ratio of pressures on either side is the square root of the ratio of absolute temperatures. This counterintuitive result is due to tangential forces between the gas molecules and the sides of the narrow pores in the plates. The effect of these thermomolecular forces is very similar to the thermomechanical effects of superfluid liquid helium. This liquid, which lacks all viscosity, will climb the sides of its container towards a warmer region. In fact, this form of liquid helium climbs so quickly up the sides of a thin capillary tube dipped into it, that a fountain is produced at the tube's other end.""(Philip Gibbs).

Studies in the Early Middle Ages (SEM 28) This volume is the result of a conference at University College London in 2007 which addressed the scale and form of civil defences in early medieval Europe, c. 800?1000. Previous work has largely focussed on individual sites or specific categories of evidence. These papers offer new interdisciplinary perspectives driven by a landscape approach. Several contributions focus on civil defence in England around the time of King Alfred the Great, and together provide a new agenda for the study of Anglo-Saxon military landscapes. European case-studies facilitate a comparative approach to local and regional defensive structures and interpretive paradigms. Topics and themes covered include civil defence landscapes, the organization and form of defensive structures, and the relationships and dynamics between social complexity, militarization, and external threats. With papers ranging from England to Spain and Germany to Scandinavia the volume is of relevance to a range of disciplines including archaeology, history, onomastics, geography, and anthropology. John Baker is Research Associate at the University of Nottingham, Stuart Brookes is Research Associate, and Andrew Reynolds is Professor in Medieval Archaeology, both at the UCL Institute of Archaeology.
