La traduction est de Pierre-Antoine de La Place (Calais 1707 - Paris 1793).Les pionniers du roman “noir” anglais sont Horace Walpole (Le Château d’Otrante) et Cara Reeve. “Treize ans s’écoulèrent entre la publication du Château d’Otrante et l’apparition de son premier successeur, qui marque une étape dans le progrès de la fiction “terrifiante”. Clara Reeve, auteur de plusieurs autres ouvrages, publia en 1777 sont l’œuvre la plus célèbre...” - Killen. Le roman terrifiant ou Roman noir p. 10-15.“Le roman de Clara Reeve joua un rôle essentiel dans la transmission des thèmes principaux du Château d’Otrante, et surtout lui assura une diffusion bien plus grande, en réduisant, de façon sans doute illégitime mais efficace, le rêve gothique de Walpole aux dimensions d’un mélodrame bourgeois.” Lévy. Romans noirs n° 3 (cette édition).Pierre-Antoine de La Place, le traducteur, est un écrivain très fécond et très oublié. Il s’était fait un nom grâce à ses traductions de romans et pièces de théâtre anglais. Dans son Cours de littérature (XIV, p. 312-328) La Harpe lui consacre une notice détaillée. Il raconte que le jeune La Place fut élevé à Saint-Omer dans un collège de jésuites anglais. Il y désapprit si bien sa langue maternelle, qu’en sortant du collège à l’âge de 17 ans, il fut, de son propre aveu, obligé de se remettre à l’étude du français qu’il avait oublié.Exemplaire sur VERGÉ FORT, provenant de la BIBLIOTHÈQUE DU CHÂTEAU DE TETSCHEN (aujourd’hui D ín en République Tchèque) qui appartenait alors à la famille princière THUN-HOHENSTEIN. Chopin séjourna dans ce château situé au bord de l’Elbe en 1835. Il y composa une valse dédiée à Joséphine von Thun-Hohenstein, son élève. La bibliothèque du château avait été achetée en bloc en 1934 par le célèbre libraire H. P. Kraus. Grand ex-libris armorié imprimé en rouge au verso du titre. Tous les livres de cette bibliothèque portent cet ex-libris. La pièce de titre (en haut du dos) est défraîchie.

1844 Title page and one beautifully hand-coloured plate, 2 explanatory text leaves, contemporary marbled wrappers, with printed label mounted on front wrapper. With an old library stamp on the lower margin of the last text page, otherwise good clean copy with the plate well-coloured.Rare copy of the marine bivalve genus Myadora (Myochamidae) being a part of the "Conchologia Iconica", started by Lovell Reeve in 1843 and finished (rather than completed) long after Reeve's death in 1865 by G. B. Sowerby, comprising 20 volumes in all. This monograph includes the description and illustration of several species described by Reeve and not illustrated before. Most of the descriptions in the Conchologia iconica (of species and specimens) are based on material collected by the most famous shell collector of the 19th century, Hugh Cuming (1791-1865).

Après Le château d'Otrante de Horace Walpole paru en 1764, The old english Baron est le second roman gothique de la littérature, et l'auteur, Clara Reeve écrit dans sa préface :"cette histoire est le produit littéraire duChâteau d'Otrante, écrite sur le même plan, avec un motif qui unit les circonstances les plus attrayantes et les plus intéressantes de l'ancien roman et du roman moderne, tout en assumant un caractère et une manière propre, qui diffère des deux; il se distingue par l'appellation d'une histoire gothique, qui est une image des temps et des moeurs gothiques. " Ces deux premiers romans donnèrent naissance à un courant littéraire important en Angleterre et qui eut des retombées en France comme en Allemagne.
