Premier tirage de l'édition originale des oeuvres d'Horace publiées par l'imprimeur et graveur John Pine (1690-1756), peut-être élève du graveur français Bernard Picart (1673-1733) actif à Amsterdam. Deux volumes in-8 de 232 x 149 mm pour (xxx) 264 (i) et (xxii) 191 (xiii) pp. Somptueuse reliure plein maroquin lie-de-vin, dos à 5 nerfs soulignés de pointillés dorés, pièce de titre à double encadrement doré avec mention "HORATII OPERA" et tomaison en doré séparés d'un mince tiret doré, entrenerfs à double filets et riches motifs doublement symétriques, frises à double filet doré en coiffe et queue, motifs à traits dorés aux coiffes. Plats richement travaillés à motifs dorés en barrière d'église encadrés, motifs dorés aux chasses et aux roulettes des contreplats. Tranches supérieures dorées, tranchefiles. Gardes colorées aux motifs en camaïeu avec un espace prévu pour un ex-libris, laissé vide. Véritable tour de force technique, ce livre a été entièrement gravé, des illustrations à chacun des caractères. Frontispice, page de titre, dédicace, avis au lecteur, liste des souscripteurs, bandeaux, culs-de-lampe et très nombreuses illustrations à chaque volume. Dans son introduction en latin, John Pine explique que le texte a d'abord été composé au plomb, puis imprimé page par page sur du papier non absorbant à partir duquel il a été transféré sur des plaques de cuivre. Les empreintes des lettres ont ensuite été tracées à l'acide ou au burin et les plaques gravées avec les vignettes et autres décorations qui remplissent chaque page. À noter la longue liste des souscripteurs à chaque volume, indiquant la forte attente liée au livre avant même sa parution dans l'Europe éclairée (Royaume-Uni, France, Hollande, Allemagne...) le premier s'ouvrant sur une mention de Frédéric, prince de Galles, William duc de Cumberland et "W.C.H.F" prince d'Orange comme souscripteurs principaux, suivis des mentions du duc de Lorraine, du roi de France et du roi du Portugal. Coquille de la p. 108 du tome II bien présente : le médaillon du bandeau comprend le mot "pot. est." au lieu de "potest", faute corrigée dans le second tirage. "Maître total de son art, [John] Pine a créé l'un des plus élégant livres anglais du XVIIIe siècle." (Ray, The Illustrator and the Book in England from 1790 to 1914, p.3). "[L'édition des oeuvres d'Horace par Pine offre] une unité entre la décoration et le texte, qui suggère parfois l'Horace de Didot de 1799 ; un contraste entre les traits épais et fins dans les lettres, qui découle naturellement du processus de gravure, préfigure la conception typographique de Baskerville, Bodoni et Didot ; et le large « interligne » entre les lignes du texte qui a beaucoup contribué à donner aux pages une apparence brillante." Accompagné d'un boîtier protecteur plein tissu lie-de-vin (coiffes côté livre un peu usées, coins légèrement émoussées) et de nombreuses lettres en français et en anglais, avec mentions en portugais, avec des informations sur cette édition et sur l'achat du volume. Charnières émoussées, légères traces de frottement à certaines points des plats, toutes petites taches sur certains plats. First issue of the first edition of Horace's work by the printer and engraver John Pine (1690-1756), perhaps a pupil of the French engraver Bernard Picart (1673-1733) based in Amsterdam. Two octavo volumes of 232 x 149 mm for (xxx) 264 (i) and (xxii) 191 (xiii) pp. Sumptuously bound in full wine-coloured morocco. Spine with 5 raised bands underlined with gilt dots, title piece with a double gilt frame bearing the gilt mention "HORATII OPERA" and volume number separated by a thin gilt dash. Rich symmetrical patterns doubly framed in gilt between the raised bands, friezes with double gilt fillet on the upper and lower parts of the spine, patterns with gilt lines on the upper part. Richly tooled covers with gilt patterns looking like church barriers, gilt motifs on the edges and roulettes of the pastedowns. Top upper text block gilt. Headbands. Colored guards with a polychromatic pattern and a space provided for an ex-libris, left blank. A true technical tour de force, this book was entirely engraved, from illustrations to each of the characters. Frontispiece, title page, dedication, notice to the reader, list of subscribers, headbands, tailpieces and very numerous illustrations in each volume. In his introduction in Latin, John Pine explains that the text was first composed in lead, then printed page by page on non-absorbent paper from which it was transferred to copper plates. The impressions of the letters were then traced with acid or burin and the plates engraved with the vignettes and other decorations that filled each page. Of note are the long list of subscribers to each volume, indicating the high level of anticipation for the book even before its publication in enlightened Europe (United Kingdom, France, Holland, Germany, etc.) the first opening with a mention of Frederick, Prince of Wales, William Duke of Cumberland and "W.C.H.F" Prince of Orange as principal subscribers, followed by mentions of the Duke of Lorraine, the King of France and the King of Portugal. Misprint on p. 108 of volume II is present: the medallion of the headband shows the word "pot. est." instead of "potest", a mistake corrected in the second printing. "Pine's complete command of his craft makes this the most elegant of English eighteenth-century books in which text and illustrations alike are entirely engraved" (Ray, The Illustrator and the Book in England from 1790 to 1914, p.3). "[Pine's edition of Horace's works offers] a unity between decoration and text which at times suggests Didot's Horace of 1799; a contrast between thick and thin strokes in the letters which naturally follows from the engraving process but which foreshadows the type design of Baskerville, Bodoni, and Didot; and the wide "leading" between the lines of the text which did so much to give their pages a brilliant effect" (Printing and the Mind of Man, Fine Printing Exhibition at the Royal Library of the British Museum, July-September 1963, 105). Accompanied by a protective full wine-colored cloth slipcase (edges on the book side a little worn, corners on the other side slightly rubbed) and numerous letters in French and English, with mentions in Portuguese, about this edition and the purchase of this copy. Rubbed hinges, slight traces of rubbing on the gilted covers, very small stains on the inside parts of the covers. Paper slightly crinkled, minor foxing on a few pages.‎
