The Author proceeds from a historical introduction of China to a travelogue account of his travel into Hunnan Province, at the time little known to West, and finally series of topical essays on his impressions of China and the Chinese, commerce and commercial relations, finances, construction techniques, inland communications (waterways and roadways), railways, the yellow-peril, and twentieth century China.
