Lovanii [Leuven], Typis Academicis 1771 xxxii + 676 + [iii] pp., contains an extensive index, 26cm., text clean and bright, few pages are somewhat browned, 19th cy. hardcover binding (leather spine, decorated boards, corners bumped), text in Latin, small libr. stamp on first blanco endpaper and on title page, good condition, [Molanus Joannes, 1533-1585, famous Contra-Reformation theologian, professor of Theology and Rector of the Louvain University (Belgium). This work concerns a first edition annotated by Paquot, based on the 1594-edition which was on itself a revised and enlarged edition of the very first edition of 1570: "De picturis et imaginibus sacris liber unus, tractans de vitandis circa eas abusibus et de earundem significationibus". In this work Molanus deals with the proper content of religious images, based on the decrees of the Council of Trent (1563).
