Previous owner's name in contemporary hand to title-page. Small repair to title-page, a few leaves with underlinings in red and a few leaves with a vague dampstain, otherwise a nice and clean copy. Two uncommon works, both first editions, by Pelargus providing explanations and commentary on the Gospels of Matthew and John, respectively. They are both structured in a question-and-answer format and are fine examples of early modern biblical exegesis. Christoph Pelargus (1565–1633) was a German Protestant theologian known for his mediating stance during the religious conflicts of his time. He studied theology at the University of Frankfurt where he became a professor and earned his doctorate in 1589. In 1596, he was appointed General Superintendent of Brandenburg and later became a key figure in the theological faculty at Frankfurt. Pelargus advocated for peaceful coexistence between Lutheran and Reformed confessions.
