" London, published for the proprietor, and sold by Longman, Rees, Orme...Colnaghi.., 1828, format in-folio, (36,5 x 26,5 cm). engraved title + typographical title + (2)nn pp + xxxvi pp + xxv pp; + 129 engraved plates on China paper, all laid down.(complete). Bound in contemporary quarter vellum, red leather title label on spine, boards covered with dark grey paper. Top edge gilt. Nice copy allthough the vellum binding shows some faint stains and some minor traces of use. Inside with very faint occasional foxing spots (large majority of the plates completely untouched). Still a very fine copy. See Bigmore & Wymann : Bibliography of printing Vol II pp 98. This is a fine copy of the large paper edition, which, according to Bigmore was never really put on the market. It was distributed by William Ottley among his friends and fellow collectors. This large paper copy contains, as an extra, facsimiles of the Nielli printed on silver in exact imitation of the originals. An evidently rare and also important book on the Western art of engraving and book illustration. It is one of the finest publications to appear in the wake of the neo-gothic revival which spurred the interest in sixteenth c. engraving."
