In fine grande carte dépliante de la Chine "Map of China to accompany the narrative of the earl of Elgins mission China & Japan in the years 1857-58-59", et deux petites croquis dépliants intitulés le premier "River Pei-Ho or Tien-Sin-Hoa, from the entrance to Tien-Sin, with notres by Captain Osborn", le second "The Peiho River from Tien Sing to Pékin according to account of Lord Macartney's Embassy 1793, with notes in 1858 by Captain Osborn. Officier de la Royal Navy, Sherard Osborn (1822-1875) est connu notamment pour son exploration de l'arctique. Il a été également une autorité reconnue dans les questions chinoises. Capitaine de la frégate HMS Furious, il participa à la seconde guerre de l'opium (1856-1860) dans le cadre de la mission anglaise d'Elgin, sous le gouvernement Palmerston. La prise de Canton et le bombardement naval des forts du Peï-Ho qui protégeaient l'accès de Pékin forcèrent la Chine à signer le traité de T'ien-tsin (1858). Il prévoyait notamment avantages commerciaux et indemnités. Suite au refus de la Chine de mettre en oeuvre le traité, les forces anglo-françaises investirent T'ien-tsin et Pékin et pillèrent la Palais d'été. Osborn analyse et défend les intérêts de l'Empire britannique en Chine et note dans son chapitre "Our future relations with China" p. 71: "There were...additionnal proofs of the truth that the European has ever to use force rather than argument to obtain his ends in China, be they however moderate, however just"...Reliure et cartes en bonne condition.
