‎Now famous for their immediate impact of color, light, and atmospheric effect, the landscapes of Romantic painter J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) were at first the object of opposing critical claims: from one side the British artist was charged with painting ''pictures of nothing and very like,'' from the other, with allowing too much ''content'' to eclipse his presentation of nature. Taking this paradox as its starting point, Kathleen Nicholson's richly illustrated book proposes a thorough revision of how we understand the enigmatic artist who revolutionized landscape painting. Advancing the growing interest in Turner's handling of content, without ignoring questions of style, Nicholson shows how Turner used the themes of antiquity to explore the ways natural imagery can embody meaning, and how he came to view interpretation itself as a primary subject. Nicholson maintains that by seeking themes in ancient myth, culture, and history, Turner was able to reinvest nature with new values and concepts, thereby accomplishing a genuinely modern revision of classical landscape in an early nineteenth-century idiom. His inquiry into the nature of meaning, she argues, led him to articulate a narrative that engaged the viewer in ''reading'' or interpreting both symbolic and purely visual imagery. ‎First German edition of Nicholson's famous paper in which he, together with his friend Anthony Carlisle, succeeded in breaking up molecules into the constituent atoms of hydrogen and oxygen. They thus established the usefulness of the converse of the voltaic cell, by using electricity to produce chemical actions.""On March 20 of that year (1820) Volta wrote to Banks, president ofthe Royal Society, informing him of his construction of an electric battery. Nicholson heard of this and with the aid of a friend built his own Voltaic pile by May 2. It was the first in England. Nicholson's great contribution was to place wires attached to the two ends of the pile in water. He found that with the current flowing, bubbles of gaz (hydrogen and oxygen) ere given off. He had ""electolyzed"" water, breaking up the molecules into the individual elements. He thus reversed the demonstration of Cavendish, that hydrogen and oxygen could unite to form water. This was the first demonstration that an electric current could bring about a chemical reaction - the reverse of olta's demonstration that a chemical action could bring about an electrical current.""(Asimov). Le tout est contenu dans une chemise cartonnée avec «BEN NICHOLSON» et le logo Lafranca sur le plat, et fermé dans une caissette protectrice en aluminium, dessinée par François Lafranca et réalisée par Ferruccio Mantovani à Locarno. Tirée à 50 exemplaires plus 6 épreuves dartiste, celui-ci est le numéro 36. Comme neuf.‎

‎Scarce first edition. Nicholson considered it an entirely new work. In the Advertisement is stated ""This work, though formed on the basis of the Dictionary in two volumes quarto, published several years since, by the same Author, is in effect AN ENTIRELY NEW WORK"" the articles being either considerably enlarged, or entirely rewritten, and in every instance being adopted to the present improved state of Chemical Science."" The Appendix contains Humphrey Davy's Bakerian Lecture on the decomposition of the fixed alkalies by electricity.Nicholson in collaboration with Anthony Carlisle constructed a voltaic pile and by this equipment they discovered the evolution of gases by the passage of the electric current through water (the decomposition of water). ‎12 Sports: Golf / Boxe Hunting / Cricket / Figure-Skating etc. Introduit par un autoportrait de l'artiste gravé sur bois et une introduction d'Octave Uzanne; l'almanach est composé de douze planches en couleur faisant face au mois dans lequel le sport illustré était le plus souvent pratiqué. Les douze sports illustrés sont La chasse au Renard, La chasse à courre, Les courses, Courses en canot, La pêche à la ligne, Le jeu du Cricket, Le tir à l'arc, Le "four-in-hand", La chasse en plaine, Le jeu du golf sur la plage, Les exercices de Boxe et Le patinage.Sir William Nicholson était un peintre anglais particulièrement réputé pour ses illustrations.
