Hanicq, 1850, in-folio, half-title + woodengraved titlepage + titlepage with woodengraved vignette + 316 pp + 13 full-page woodengravings with blank verso, entirely printed in red and black, the engraved titlepage heightened with coloring, modern red cloth with black leather title label on smooth spine, edges sprinkled, ex-library stamp on blank verso of typographical title, apart from some unobtrusive foxing at the first 3 leaves a fine copy. Monumental edition of this liturgical book of the Roman Catholic Church with the texts and rites of the pontifical masses (these are masses celebrated by bishops). The book , entirely printed in red and black, is printed in two columns. The illustrations are engraved on wood by Henry Brown according designs in the traditional Flemish style of the 17th century by Van Lerius , Hendrickx, P.P. Rubens (a painting). Henry Brown , professor at the Antwerp Academy, was one of the artists responsible for the revival of the art of woodengraving in Flanders in the 19th century. Some of the plates were printed by Buschmann (Antwerp), others by Hanicq (Mechelen) or Delevigne et Callewaert in Brussels. The book contains also some pages with printed music staves.
