The engravings are by Japanese artists and show temples, views, portraits, history scenes, musical instruments, ships etc.. Some of the plates have captions in English. Many of the plates have more than one illustration. Therefore there are around 150 or so illustrations. The author published in 1876 in Nagasaki a book on the history of Japan. This album with illustrations was intended as a companion to that study. His history book is famous because in it he bizarrely claimed that the Japanese were descended from a lost Jewish tribe.
