"8. North Yorkshire, photography album by William Marshall , s.d. (ca. 1938-1948), oblong format, 28 x 38 cm, imitation leather album with a metal ring binding, contains 1 portrait of the photographer and 27 photographs ( 19 x 24 cm) mounted on stiff black board. The photographs have written captions in white ink. Finely preserved photo album which can be dated from the sparse motorcars on some pictures ; early Forties of the last century. The black/white photographs depict village views and landscapes in North Yorkshire ; Burnsall , Red Lion at Burnsall , Appletreewick with the New Inn, Gayle and geese at Gayle , Simon's seat , Hubberholme , Hubberholme bridge , The George Inn , Dent church , Fountains Abbey , Jervaulx Abbey , Bainbridge, Gordale Scar , [...]. The album opens with a portrait of the photographer and a note explaining that his widow Marion donated the album to a friend. The photographs have apart from their documentary interest also a definite pictorial charm."
