Proceeding from an international perspective and various starting points, Essays on Finnish Modernism approaches phenomena in Finnish architecture and design that entail the problematic of modernism. The themes of the book are the main elements of modernism, such as the emergence and development of mass production, changes in consumer habits, improvements to the quality of life and emphasis in design on the problems of increased equality. Although modernism was introduced into Finland around the turn of the 1920s and 1930s, modern design did not become part of the lives of ordinary consumers until the 1950s, as the Secon Wold War halted the developments that had begun in the 1930s. Modernism is of topical interest. In 2009, the anniversary of the bauhaus School was celebrated in Germany. Founded by the architect Walter Gropius in Weimar in 1919, the Bauhaus has remained, despite its small scope and brief duration, a symbol of modernism and its most prominet torchbearer.
