In 2019 vieren we het 450-jarige jubileum van het overlijden van Pieter Bruegel de Oude (ca. 1525/30-1569). Naar aanleiding hiervan organiseert het Kunsthistorisches Museum (KHM) in Wenen 's werelds grootste monografische tentoonstelling over deze kunstenaar ooit. Ook aan deze bijbehorende tentoon-stellingscatalogus werkten de grootste Bruegel-kenners van Europa mee, zoals Manfred Sellink (directeur KMSKA), Ron Spronk (bijzonder hoogleraar Radboud Universiteit) en Sabine P not (curator KHM). De auteurs maken het oeuvre van Bruegel toegankelijk aan de hand van uitgebreide en inhoudelijk sterk onderbouwde entries. Het geheel biedt een verfrissende kijk op de werken van de meester en is het hedendaagse referentiewerk over Pieter Bruegel de Oude. Bruegel dankt zijn populariteit aan zijn ongelooflijke composities, die bevolkt worden door veel, meestal kleine, intrigerende personages. Deze erg rijk ge llustreerde catalogus neemt de kijker mee op een ware ontdekkingstocht door de schilderijen en ontsluit stap voor stap de veelgelaagde, vaak morali serende betekenis. De expo Pieter Bruegel the Elder loopt van 2 oktober 2018 tot en met 13 januari 2019 in het KHM in Wenen.
