You will be disappointed to find all your efforts have been in vain about Central India. Lord William [Bentick, gouverneur général des Indes] is not disposed to act against his council or rather his secretaries..."Sur les réformes qu'il s'efforce d'instaurer en tant que gouverneur de Bombay :"I am making every effort to reduce expenditures & it is necessary – provided we do not confound saving with economy... I am laying down principles & taking measures calculated to do all the good that can be expected from my short administration. Did I not labour this way the whole machine would stop..."Sur l'administration de Bombay et son voyage à travers la province :"The Residency gentlemen do not like the reduction of their supremacy. They tell me Syaju has gained a victory. Syaju says he is degraded & I tell both to hold their tongues & that they will be soon if not at present in their proper places. I have been at Ahmednagar & am going to Darwar. If I return by December to Bombay I may still be able to visit Guzerat [Gujarat] this year. I am now anxious as it is far from improbable I leave India in the end of 1829 & certainly in 1830."
