Old owners name on foot of titlepage. 42 unnumb. leaves + 815 pp. (p. 815 is the full page woodengraved printers device, verso blank). Only few scattered brownspots, probably lightly washed by the rebinding. From ab. p. 500 the upper margins have some faint dampspots, which on ab. 25 leaves has left some small loss of paper, and on a few places the loss of a letter in the caption title, but everywhere professionally repaired with paperpulp where needed.
First edition of Magnus' great work, which constitutes the first larger geographical-ethnographical description of Scandinavia and one of the most important sources on the customs of the Northern peoples and daily life in the 16th century.""Olaus Magnus (1490-1557) was the last Catholic archbishop of Sweden, which he left in 1524. This book is still one of the most importent sources on Northern customs and daily life of the time. The artist of the wood-cuts is unknown but most of them are made after drawings by the author. 13 editions were published in 16th century and several in the following, comprising translations into Dutch, French, German, Italian and lastly into Swedish. The history was intended to expand the information in the large map, ""Carta marina"", which Olaus Magnus published in venice in 1539, and of which only one copy was known, until a second was discovered in 1962 and acquired by the University Library of Upsala."" (Swedish Books 1280-1967, no.18).Collijn 2, pp. 221-7. - Sabin, 43830.In reality, this famous work is a large commentary with notes to Olaus Magnus' famous map, the ""Carta Marina"", which he published in Venice in 1539, of which only two copies are known. The Carta Marina (""Map of the Sea"" or ""Sea Map""), is the earliest map of the Nordic countries that gives details and place names. Only two earlier maps of Scandinavia are known, those of Jacob Ziegler and Claudius Clavus. The ""Carta Marina"" is reproduced here in smaller size. The woodcut illustrations and views are of the greatest importance to the cultural history of the Nordic countries, as they illustrate the religions, folklore, occupations, as well as the geographies, fauna etc. of the Scandinavian people. They have since been reproduced a number of times. The artist is not known, but they are probably carved after sketches by Olaus Magnus himself. Pp. 497-644 a. 1 engraved plate. (entire issue ""Heft"" 4 offered). Magnus' paper: pp. 583-606, 1 woodcut in the text. Clean and fine.
First printing of a classic paper in physiology in which Magnus concludes that RESPIRATION TAKES PLACES IN THE TISSUES. After he had analyzed gases in the blood he found that there was a higher concentration of oxygen in the blood flowing in arteries than that flowing in the veins, thus being the ""First quantitative analysis of the blood gases"" (Garrison & Morton, No. 929).""In this paper Magnus determines that the oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide content of the arterial and venous blood of horses. He introduces blood into mercury in a funnel and, by repeatedly applying nergative pressure, he liberates the gases from the blood. The mercury seal maintains the anaerobic conditions when transferring the gases to a eudiometer for analysis. Magnus finds a positive arterio-venous difference for oxygen and a negative difference for carbon dioxide. rom this he concludes that carbon dioxide is added not in the lungs but during circulation. he also calculates the balance of carbon dioxide, assuming values for the cardiac output and carbon dioxide elimination and the measured arterio-venous difference. This is the first use of what later came to be called Fich's principle.""(Gedeon ""Science and Technology in Medicine"" Nr. 37).
Stockholm, 1849-52. Bound with the original blue back wrapper (for the second part?) in a very nice recent greenish moiré-like half cloth with marbled paper over boads. Gilt lettering to spine. First and last leaf of the first part evenly browned. A vague, marginal damp stain to the second part. Overall very nice and clean. Possibly washed when bound. (6), VIII, (2), 194 pp. + (4), II, (IV), 215, (1), (, -errata) pp.
Exceedingly scarce first edition of this pioneering classic in alcohol-literature, the first work systematically classifying the physical and mental damages attributed to alcohol, thus for the first time treating alcoholism scientifically, and the work in which the word ""alcoholism"" is coined. “Magnus Huss… was a pioneer in alcohol research, and his most famous work “Alcoholismus Chronicus” in two parts is an international classic.” (Ars Medica Svecana – own translation from Swedish). As leading physician at the “Serafimerlasarettet”, Huss had ample opportunity of studying the physical, mental, moral, and social effects of alcohol abuse. These are the consequences that he scientifically both describe, analyze, and classify in the present treatise. “Alcoholismus Cronicus” provides the first scientific classification of the damage done by alcohol and constitutes a pioneering breakthrough that turned the field of alcohol research into a scientific one. Magnus Huss (1807-1890) occupies the same pioneering status within alcohol-research as Pasteur in bacteriology. Huss was professor of medicine at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm (Sweden) and physician to the Swedish king. In 1853, he received the Monthya Price from the French Academy for his research in alcoholism. Andral, who was one of the people who had awarded Huss with this prestigious prize, said on the occasion: ""Magnus Huss has collected a great deal of material relating to chronic alcoholism, a condition rarely seen in France"", a quotation well describing the lack of scientific research of the field before Huss' work. With his thorough research, Huss succeeded in placing the treatment of alcohol addiction within the medical field and completely altered the way we view and treat the illness. The second part of the work begins with a bibliography of more than 100 works related to alcoholism , the first being from 1531. This clearly shows that Huss is not the first to describe physical and mental symptoms connected to alcohol abuse" but these earlier treatises are not systematic, and none of them provide the actual causes for the symptoms. Huss’ “Alcoholismus Chronicus”, however, for the first time systematically classifies the various kinds of damage done by alcohol, coins the term “alcoholism, and is the single most important treatise in the history of alcohol research. First edition, first issue. ""This famous history was written in Venice in 1540, where the author was then living as a catholic refugee - he had left Sweden in 1526. In it, the Gothic romantic conception of Sweden as the ""vagina gentium"", the idea of Jordanes, 6th century chronicler of the Goths, is developed in a history of Swedish kings both at home and abroad leading the migrating peoples. The conception had alredy been adopted by mediaeval Swedish historians and was the leading ideology of Swedish patriotism in the 17th century when the text was translated into Swedish (1620). The book was posthumously published by the author's brother Olaus Magnus, who dedicated it to Pope Julius III as well as to the Swedish Crown Prince Erik.""
Summary CC CM, 172A contains the editio princeps of two Latin translations made by the late medieval Dutch Church reformer Geert Grote (Gerardus Magnus, 1340-1384) and a revised edition of another translation, made by Anthonius Henrici de Viersen (fl. 1460-1490), Brother of the Common Life in Butzbach and collaborator of the proto-humanist Gabriel Biel. The source texts had originally been composed in Middle Dutch, by the great Brabantine mystic Jan van Ruusbroec (1293-1381) and by Godfried Wevel, one of his fellow canons regular at Groenendaal near Brussels from 1360 until his death in 1396. Another editio princeps completes the volume: a Middle Dutch adaptation of Meister Eckhart's Reden der Unterweisung, the main source for Wevel's Vanden twaelf dogheden. This adaptation was probably compiled in Grote's entourage, if not by him personally, and is here edited as Eyn boeck van der gelatenheit. The publication of Grote's adaptation of Eckhart and the accompanying convincingly underpinned analysis may mean a landslide for the proper assessment of Eckhart's reception in the Low Countries and adjacent territories in modern western Germany during the later Middle Ages. Each of the edited texts is accompanied by an apparatus comparatiuus, indicating in detail all discrepancies between the translations and the source texts. Lengthy introductions complete the volume.
