Bound in late 18th or early 19th century full leather, smooth spine with gilt decoration and title label. All edges painted red. Marbled end papers. Copy from the library of the Meaux Seminary ( small printed ex-libris on the first page down). Title page slightly stained, tiny damage at the top turn in. Still a very fine copy, complete with all the text leaves. Main work of the Jesuit Maffei in which he treats the 16th c. history of Asia, mainly India and Japan. The work is written in elegant Latin. In 1603 the Jesuit Visitor (Valignano) wrote from Macao ; '' Of all those who have so far written about Japan none has done it with greater precision or in better order than Father G.P. Maffei''. The first edition dates from 1588 and was accompanied by a selection of Letters from India (Goa). These letters are not present in this edition. This French provincial edition , from the bookseller Adam Cavelier, is quite rare and hardly available in libraries outside France. (Sommervogel vol. V column 298).."
