The volume contains Justus Lipsius's two importent works on Roman military history in the fine printings from the Plantin office. ""De Militia Romana"", first published in 1595, is a commentary on Polybius's ""History"", with the Greek text and a parallel Latin translation. ""Poliorcetica"" (1599) is a study of the Roman machinery of war. Both works are illustrated with the fine engravings of Peeter vander Borcht and Theodore Galle.""His (Lipsius) throughout acquaince with Latin literature and Roman history is conspicuous in his numerous treatises, especially in those entitled ""De Militia Romana"" and ""Poliorcetia"" (the former including a commentary on the Roman Camp as described by Polybius)..."" Baudrier, VII-226-227 (les 8 pp. d'index font partie des feuillets liminaires, ici ils sont à la fin. Philologue et humaniste allemand, il suivit les cours de droit de l'illustre Marc-Antoine Muret à Rome, puis revint à Louvain pour y enseigner et voyagea. Converti au lutheranisme, il enseigna à Iena puis Leyde où il abandonna la confession d'Augsbourg pour la religion réformée.Mêlé aux polémiques soulevées par son ouvrage sur la religion unique et la répression des sectaires, il se retira de Hollande, envoya sa démission de l'Université de Leyde et se convertit publiquement au catholicisme et, malgré des offres brillantes qui affluaient de toute l'Europe, il choisit l'Université de Louvain.Sa correspondance, qui était fort étendue et qui concerne de nombreux savants de l'époque, présente un vif intérêt. Le siège du Conseil de l'Union Européenne à Bruxelles porte son nom. Deux minuscules cernes à quelques feuillets et brunissure en haut du second plat de reliure, sinon bel exemplaire en bonne reliure d'époque.

Contributors were Miraeus, Corselius, Rivius, Puteanus, Van de Wouwere and Scribani. Balthasar Moretus was the compiler (see Lipsius & Leuven, KUL exhibition catalogue 1997 n°97.).

This item is described by Bowen as Lipsius HAL 18. The pivelige of Velpius is dated 4 april 1604 (Cambrai) ; 28 january 1604 (Papal privilege)."

Both works in the first illustrated edition. The work deals with the combats of gladiators and shows their weapons and equipments in combat scenes. The second work deals with Roman amphiteaters, particularly the Colloseum.
