‎First apperance of Lewis' first paper on relativity in which he derived the mass-energy relationship in a different way from Albert Einstein's derivation.Lewis’ other theoretical interests also flourished at M.I.T. The publication of Einstein’s theory of relativity (1905) and his mass-energy equation renewed Lewis’ interest in his early speculations on radiation. He derived the mass-energy equation from his early idea of the pressure of light without using the principle of relativity (1908). This striking concurrence of his view with Einstein’s convinced Lewis of the value of his youthful ideas and made him one of the very few early supporters of Einstein and relativity in America. Lewis is best known for his discovery of the covalent bond in chemistry. and his naming of the ""photon"" in 1926.The volume contains further importent papers by Rutherford & Royds, Lord Kelvin, Barkla, Soddy, J.J. Thomson, W.H. Bragg.‎

‎The exceedingly rare early (second?) German translation of Bishop Bayly's seminal ""The Practice of Piety"". The book became immensely popular during the 17th century, particularly among Puritans and other Protestant groups and was “the most popular English book in Germany in the seventeenth century. At least sixty-nine German editions were published before 1743” (Damrau, Early Puritan Literature in Germany). We have not been able to trace a single copy of the early edition in the trade. “Lewis Bayly was born around 1575 at Carmarthen, Wales, where Thomas Bayly, who probably was his father, was serving as curate at that time. Lewis and his first wife, who was probably Judith Appleton, had their first son in 1595, followed by four additional children. Bayly secured the living of Shipston-on-Stour, in Worcestershire, in 1597, and three years later was presented to the crown living of Evesham in the same county, where he served as headmaster of the grammar school. Bayly soon became known for his preaching and was appointed a chaplain to Prince Henry within a few years of King James’s accession. In 1606, he was presented to the rectory of Llanedi, Carmarthenshire, but remained largely at Evesham. Though he was a conformed Calvinist who respected the authority of the church, Bayly emphasized Puritan-like piety. Shortly after his wife passed away in 1608, he began to work on turning some of his sermons into what would become a Protestant classic, The Practice of Piety.”(Beeke, Meet the Puritans). ‎ Trois années de travail auront été nécessaires pour élaborer cette campagne de publicité pour des sous-vêtements féminins qui envahissent les abribus parisiens et la presse féminine, dans un concept imaginé par Eric Flimon, à partir de 1995. Avec le résultat que l'on sait : 150 affiches, réparties sur 4 périodes, avec six photographes différents et une quinzaine de modèles, dont deux, seulement, posèrent pour le haut, et le bas. 25 tirages noir et blanc (150 x 210 mm) avec étiquette au dos. Boîte signée de Julie Nadot. Collection de 25 tirages originaux signés pour les « leçons de séduction » des fameuses campagnes de lingerie « Aubade », avec les légendes. Leçons 27, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 42, 43, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53 (Hervé Lewis), 54, 55, 67, 72, 73, 95 et 99 (Michel Pérez). ‎

‎La marque, créée en 1875 par le docteur Bernard, puis rachetée en 1958 par Claude Pasquier, a toujours beaucoup innové dans l’industrie textile. Dans les années 1970, Aubade fait sauter les bretelles le premier puis crée le soutien-gorge dos nus. C’est « l’âge d’or » d’Aubade, confirme le sociologue de la mode Frédéric Monneyron, « avec une focalisation sur l’érotisme des sous-vêtements ». En cinquante ans, la marque haut de gamme s’est forgé une solide réputation et profite de l’engouement des Français – et des hommes – pour la lingerie. En 1995, Aubade réussit un premier « coup » avec ses « leçons de séduction ». Trois années de travail auront été nécessaires pour élaborer cette campagne de publicité pour des sous-vêtements féminins qui envahissent les abribus parisiens et la presse féminine, dans un concept imaginé par Eric Flimon : à chaque fois, une photo en noir et blanc en plan rapproché sur une paire de fesses ou de seins, accompagnée d’un message qui joue sur l’humour et le double sens : « feindre l’indifférence », « le prendre par les sentiments », « arrondir les angles » : « lui ôter les mots de la bouche », « le remettre à sa place », etc. Jamais un visage entier, parfois la bouche, n’apparaît sur ces images, d’où l’homme est absent, mais où il est omniprésent en creux. Pour Marie-Noëlle Bas, présidente des Chiennes de garde, l’explication de cette dichotomie est très claire : « Depuis longtemps, Aubade a une stratégie visant à émoustiller les hommes par des positions lascives et des corps hypersexualisés. » Fanny Anselme – un mannequin qui a posé pour Aubade dans une dizaine de « leçons ») –, tout en admettant que « les clients de la marque sont des hommes dans leur très grande majorité », défend la marque : « Pour beaucoup, les publicités d’Aubade sont certes, provocantes, mais pas sexistes. Et même plébiscitées par les consommatrices. » La collection compte environ 150 affiches, réparties sur quatre périodes, avec six photographes différents (Bernard Matussière au tout début, puis Hervé Bruhat, Hervé Lewis, Michel Pérez, Thomas Paquet et finalement Terry Tsiolis). Comme il semblait difficile, sinon impossible, de trouver la perle rare qui puisse poser à la fois pour le haut et pour le bas avec des formes parfaites, ce sont une quinzaine de jeunes femmes qui seront photographiées durant les dix premières années de la campagne. Deux, néanmoins, posèrent pour le haut, et pour le bas. Vanessa Demouy fut l’un d’elle (la comédienne a posé pour les leçons 5 à 12) puis, quelques années de castings effrénés plus tard, présentée par le photographe Hervé Lewis, une certaine Sophie, croisée dans la rue : « nous avons fait toutes les dernières Leçons avec elle. Sophie est une jeune étudiante de Montpellier », confie Françoise Barthélémy, responsable commerciale de Carlin, l’agence d’Aubade depuis 1994. Elle figure - à partir de la n° 30 - sur près d’un tiers des leçons ! Chaque tirage porte au dos une étiquette de provenance (Vente Artus Enchères |Aubade) ; 18 tirages sont signés par Hervé Lewis pour les (collections Printemps-Été et Automne-Hiver entre 1999 et 2003) et 7 tirages signés par Michel Perez (collections Printemps-Été et Automne-Hiver entre 2003 et 2009). ‎
