The turbulence of the sixteenth century wrought major changes in Netherlandish society, but also left clear traces in the art of the region. The destruction of religious images, the Spanish occupation and the Dutch Revolt are all occasionally reflected in it. Why do the Roman legionaries in Brueghel's Procession to Calvary wear Spanish helmets? And what is that conspicuous Habsburg crest doing on their flag? Surely the double-headed eagle represents the much-resented foreign oppressor? And what about those crescent moons and drooping moustaches in Brueghel's Conversion of St Paul? They must surely mean something. Were the artists of the Netherlandish Renaissance covert resistance heroes? Or simply pragmatists keen to satisfy their clients? We track the evidence from the luxurious Books of Hours of the Middle Ages, through the many works of Pieter Brueghel II ('the Younger') to the great artists of seventeenth-century Flemish Baroque.

Aan het einde van de middeleeuwen bestond in het huidige provincie Nederlands Limburg en aangrenzende gebieden in Duitsland en Belgie een levendige productie van houtsculptuur. De vraag ernaar was groot want de Luiks-Bourgondische oorlogen van de vijftiende eeuw hadden grote verwoesting aangericht en vele kerken moesten worden heropgebouwd en opnieuw worden ingericht. Vaak weten we niet wie deze beelden heeft besteld of wie ze gemaakt heeft, maar dat de makers, of beter ateliers, van zeer hoge kwaliteit waren laat het nog overgebleven werk duidelijk zien. Om toch enig houvast te krijgen werden deze beeldhouwers met een zogenaamde 'noodnaam' voorzien, en veruit de bekendste daarvan is de zogenaamde 'Meester van Elsloo'. Om de beeldhouwkunst uit de noordelijke Maas-Rijnregio, en in het bijzonder de Meester van Elsloo beter onder de aandacht te brengen organiseert het Maastrichtse Bonnefantenmuseum een tentoonstelling waar een representatief beeld wordt geschetst van deze meester, naast enkele bij naam gekende tijdgenoten uit dezelfde regio zoals Jan van Steffeswert en Kersten Woyers.
