ean Bilquin heeft een boeiend oeuvre gecre erd op het grensgebied tussen traditie en vernieuwing, het terrein waarop een overgeleverde symboliek persoonlijke nuanceringen en uitbreidingen heeft ondergaan. Zijn recent werk is als een allegorie: de westerse cultuur heeft bij het begin van dit millennium nieuwe impulsen nodig en zou er goed aan doen zich opnieuw te ori nteren op de mediterrane en in het bijzonder op de klassieke cultuur. Vanaf 1980 ontplooit zich de artistieke loopbaan van Jean Bilquin (Gent, 1938). Zijn eerste werken zijn hoofdzakelijk figuratief. Later weet hij deze figuratie te herleiden tot een uitgebalanceerde abstractie waarin hij streeft naar een evenwicht tussen kleuren, architectonische elementen en subjecten. In heel zijn oeuvre zien we een ongeremde bewondering voor 'het humane' vaak weergegeven door onderwerpen ontleend aan de Griekse Mythologie n. Zijn beelden, tekeningen en schilderijen zijn het resultaat van een 'harde labeur'. Zowel psychisch als fysisch. De taak van de kunstenaar bestaat er volgens Bilquin in om ' [...]mogelijke ordeningen (te) suggereren [...]'. Door betekenis en structuur te geven streeft de artiest naar een blijvende erkenning.

When Gommaar Gilliams opens up about his work, he refers to Arcadia. The Arcadia is an historical term that has been in use since Roman times designating an imaginary, idyllic place. This concept is the starting point of Gilliams? paintings, in which he ties together various painterly influences. From Italian frescoes and Renaissance figures to East-Indian miniatures. He uses this symbolism, derived from different periods and cultures, to populate his paintings. Gilliams is a lone wolf in his own painted world, utterly inescapable and sovereign. The symbols in his works refer to a world characterized by melancholy, desire, and the duality between day and night. Gilliams casts a spell of poetic and allegorical narratives and transforms elements such as rain, flora, swans, rainbows and buildings into painterly motifs. Rather than providing those images with a new meaning, he is concerned with the image itself. Viewers are not obliged to decode all references, follow every twist and turn in his symbolism. These are merely a guide, the conveyance of an emotion.
