Born and trained in Germany, Grete Stern fled to Argentina in 1935 to escape Nazi persecution of the Jews. She soon established herself as one of the leading modernist photographers in Argentina, and her importance to the history of Argentine photography with a career spanning nearly sixty years, has only recently been recognized.
