Paestum is the classical Roman name for Poseidonia, an important city of ancient Magna Graecia, the ancient Greek colonized area in the south of present-day Italy. It is now one of the most important archaeological sites in Italy and is located on the coast, about 85 km south of Naples and 40 km from Salerno in the province of Salerno. The impressive ruins of Paestum were accidentally discovered around 1750, when King Charles IV of Naples ordered road works to be carried out in the area.
