Jose A. Portuondo . Astrolabio Habana 1973. In Spanish. Autograph of Jose Antonio Portuondo Valdor. He was a Cuban critic essayist and literary historian. The Institute of Literature and Linguistics of Cuba is named in his honor. In 1960 he was appointed as Cuba's ambassador to Mexico. He was elected as its vice president at the first Congress of Writers and Artists of Cuba and wrote the preface to El pensamiento vivo de Maceo. In 1962 he was appointed as the rector of the Universidad de Oriente and traveled extensively to various political and cultural events. In 1965 he became the director of the newly created Institute of Literature and Linguistics in Havana. In 1986 he received the National Literature Prize. His work mainly explores issues of poetics and aesthetics social literature and the history of Cuban literature from a Marxist-Leninist perspective. SKUZLO000061
