Édition originale (il existe une seconde édition à la date de 1790). Alexander Jardine (mort en 1799), qui termina sa carrière avec le grade de lieutenant-colonel, était à la fois un soldat et agent de l'espionnage anglais. Alors qu'il était stationné à Gibraltar, il fut envoyé en 1771 en mission auprès du sultan du Maroc Mohammed III ben Abdallah par le gouverneur Edward Cornwallis : la relation de son séjour auprès du prince forme la partie la plus intéressante de sa relation ; il y a ajouté des lettres envoyées de France, d'Espagne et du Portugal en 1779.
