Summary This volume reflects on Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) and the international reception of his work 150 years after his death. Rossini was the most influential opera composer of the first half of the 19th century. His exceptional position in contemporary cultural life and the international success of his works meant that monuments were erected during his lifetime and biographies, novels and plays about him appeared. The volume explores his literary reception and the dissemination of his operas in the 19th and 20th centuries in various countries, focusing in particular on stylistic and compositional legacy, the theory and practice of operatic singing, treatises and biographical memoires, and Rossini's position in politics, society and public opinion. Translations and adaptations of Rossini's libretti are analyzed with regard to their functions within in the performances in different cultures and languages. Several chapters address the influence of Rossini and his music on other composers such as Giacomo Meyerbeer, Ottorino Respighi and Ferruccio Busoni. The fame that once surrounded Rossini, however, has been lost in the course of time, and many of his works fell into oblivion. The last section of the volume sheds new light on the so-called 'Rossini Renaissance', the revival of his works in the second half of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st centuries. Piet Mondrian behind his easel, Igor Stravinsky at his piano, Max Ernst sitting smoking on his throne-like chair: Arnold Newman's photographs are classics of portraiture. His subtle arrangements constituted the foundations of "environmental portraiture." His photographs integrate the respective artist's characteristic equipment and surroundings, thus indicating his or her field of activity. The enormous fame of Newman's portraits can be ascribed to their daring compositions and sometimes astounding spatial structures. The photographer's beginnings, on the other hand, were none too promising. During the Great Depression Newman had to abandon his art studies for financial reasons. Between 1938 and 1942 he concentrated on socio-documentary photography in the ghettos of West Palm Beach, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. One might think that being forced to earn his living in a photography studio would have stifled his artistic potential: Newman portrayed up to 70 clients a day. Yet he still succeeded in developing a very personal touch and establishing himself in the New York art scene of the early 1940s. His subjects included Max Ernst, Marcel Duchamp, Marc Chagall, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Alexander Calder. With his unmistakable style, Newman became the star photographer of artists, writers and musicians.

Martin Margiela's pioneering and timeless designs made for the luxury house of Hermes between 1997 and 2003 are the stars of this book, highlighting this period in the iconic and enigmatic Belgian designer's career. The match between Hermes, the epitome of French luxury, and Maison Martin Margiela's deconstruction generated an earthquake in the fashion landscape that is still being felt to this day. Innovations in tailoring, technique and materials, as well as a new vision of fashion with an emphasis on comfort, timelessness and tactility created clothing whose primary aim is to please the wearer, not to impress the viewer. An image of women was also introduced that was no longer obsessed with youth but left room for women of different ages, thus generating an alternative vision of beauty. This key period between 20th- and 21st-century fashion is evoked through interviews with Margiela's closest collaborators, more extensive essays by Rebecca Arnold, Kaat Debo and Sarah Mower, and a foreword by Suzy Menkes. Never-before-published material from the Maison Martin Margiela archives, numerous striking and exquisitely refined images from Le Monde d'Hermes, as well as new photographic material tell the story of Margiela's supreme wardrobe for Hermes.

The uncommon first printing of Arnold's groundbreaking work on translating Homer, which constitutes the most important work in the history of translation-theory of the Homeric corpus. The work revolutionized the understanding of Homer in general, of the Homeric language and all following efforts to translate the Odyssey and the Iliad. ""The best-known commentary on how the Homeric text should be translated was written by the Victorian poet and literary and social critic Matthew Arnold in 1861, with many subsequent editions and reprintings. ""His lectures on translating Homer were the first adequate estimate, at least in English, of the literary qualities of the ""Iliad"" and ""Odyssey"" and did much to destroy the notion of a native genius or inspired folk-poet. Homer was now seen to be a conscious artist and took his place once and for all as the chief poet of antiquity, as Dante was of the Middle Ages and Shakespeare of modern times."" In his book Arnold reviewed most of the existing English translations … From this review and his own observations he extrapolated several rules for translating Homer. First, a translator should be ""faithful"" to the original, an ideal Arnold noted requires the translator to choose between producing a text so smooth that the reader does not realize it is a translation versus reproducing certain oddities of the original language to remind the reader of its origin. Second, a translator should seek to reproduce Homer's style and effect on the reader."" (Young, The Printed Homer, 2008, p. 88). Matthew Arnold (1822 -1888) was a famous English poet and cultural critic, who worked as an inspector of schools. In 1857, he was elected Professor of Poetry at Oxford and was the first in this position to deliver his lectures in English rather than in Latin. His first major achievement as Oxford-professor was his three lectures ""On Translating Homer"" that were published as they are here, in 1861. ""[T]he most substantial fruits of his professorship were the three lectures ""On Translating Homer"" (1861)-in which he recommended Homer's plainness and nobility as medicine for the modern world, with its ""sick hurry and divided aims"" and condemned Francis Newman's recent translation as ignoble and eccentric..."" (Encycl. Britt.). The work had an enormous effect on Homer studies and on classical scholarship, translation-practice, and literary theory in general.
