A Record of the Black Prince
New York, B. Appleton & Co., 1848. 8vo. (16,5 x 12 cm.). In original state with black covers moulded from a mixture of papier-mâché and plaster to imitate a Gothic carved wood-binding. Spine in black leather with title in raised letters. Binding in near mint state. 32 chromolithographed pages (incl. title-page) with framed text on thick cardboard. All edges gilt. The gluing was originally bad, so this copy is neathly reinforced in joints. Clean and fine.
First American publication. It was published in London the year before 1847 in the same design and execution. ""It was the first of the so-called 'papier mache' bindings, contrived to look like carved ebony... the result was splendidly gothic and impressive."" (Ruari Mclean).
A Record of the Black Prince. Being a selection of such passages in his life as have been most quantly and strikingly narrated by chroniclers at the period, embellished with highly wrought miniatures and borderings selected from various illuminated MS...
London, Longman, brown, Green, and Longmans, 1849. 8vo. (19,8 x 13,8 cm.). In original state with black pierced covers moulded from a mixture of papier-mâché and plaster to imitate a Gothic carved wood-binding. A few small bursts in binding, but no loss of material. Spine in black leather with some demolition of the gilt lettering. Gilt edges. Gilt inner dentelles. Title-page in red/black. II,(4),XCV pp. + 1 pp. listing ""Illuminated Works by H. Noel Humphreys"". Black letters with headings printed in read. With 4 full-page and 2 in the text of fine chromolithograped illustration. Some textleaves framed with wood-engravings. Clean and fine.
First printing of Humphrey's finest production, only printed in 1000 copies, but not all bound as this with its imitation of a carved Gothic wood-binding.

London, David Bogue, MDCCCXLV, 1845, in-4to, VIII + 216 p. + 1 Engraved Vignette-Title with 8 views (a bit damaged on the margins) + 28 steel-engraved plates (of 30 mentioned in the list of plates, last 2 plates missing, they were never bound in), Bookplate Skinos (Panof Grafsos Skinos), Original dark brown morocco leather, brown cloth on covers, large cornes, all edges marbled, a little rubbed. Front joint cracket but firm.
First Edition. Double-page panoramic view of Rome, Alltogether 29 steel-engraved plates, good impressions with strong plate-marks. First plate foxed, closed tears on sides, otherwise a good copy.
