Blank covers, author's name, title and publisher written vertically on the spine on a pink background. Dust jacket with a drawing of African-Americans playing drums, black and red on a yellow background. Autograph dedication from Langston Hughes on the first white guard: "For Paula-Lima, with a hearty welcome to our U.S.A. Sincerely, Langston Hughes, New York, July 26, 1960" in turquoise blue pen. The table of contents, at the beginning of the book, was also annotated by Hughes with the same pen p. 11. A major figure in the African-American cultural movement known as the Harlem Renaissance, the poet and novelist Langston Hughes (1901-1967) wrote works depicting the lives of black proletarians shared between joys, disillusions, hope, etc. all tinged with jazz and blues. ‎De la construction de la locomotive.Manuscrit de la traduction d'une série d'articles de G. Hughes écrit en 1892 et 1893 dans la revue "The Engineer" sur la construction de la locomotive.‎

‎ Un volume relié (16x 24 cm) non paginé de près de 200 pages. Reliure demi chagrin vert bouteille, dos lisse, titre doré. Reliure usée mais encore solide, dos passé, un accroc et mors fendu de 5 cm en haut du dos. Intérieur en parfait état.Manuscrit dont nous ne connaissons pas l'auteur, orné de nombreuses figures réalisées sur papier calque et contrecollés.Le traducteur présente ainsi son travail :" La revue anglaise 'The Engineer" a publié en 1882 et 1883 une série d'articles sur la construction de la locomotive. Ces articles donnent une description détaillé des procédés de fabrication suivis dans les ateliers d'Horwich de la Compagnie du Lancashire and Yorckshire Railway. Il sont dus à M. Hughes l'Ingénieur adjoint de M. A. Aspinall, ingénieur en chef de la traction, de cette compagnie.L'auteur a choisi comme type une locomotive à marchandises dont nous donnons la coupe longitudinale, planche VII, les procédés sont, du reste, les mêmes lorsqu'il s'agit d'une locomotive à voyageurs.Le travail est divisé en plusieurs chapitres qui traitent successivement ; Chaudronnerie, Fonderie de fer d'acier et bronze, Forge y compris la fabrication des ressorts, Chaudronnerie de cuivre et petite tôlerie, Ateliers de machines, Montage.Nous donnons ci-dessous la traduction de ces différents articles."Une note en fin de volume nous apprend que l'auteur de cette traduction était en relation épistolaire avec G. ‎Extremely scarce privately printed offprint, done by the authors themselves, of this landmark work, which led to the advent of modern neurosurgery, namely the original report on the first primary brain-tumor operation. """"The 25th of November 1884 is to be remembered as an historical date in the annals of surgery for it was upon this day that a brain tumor was first removed by surgery...."" These were the words of Edwin Bramwell... References have often been made to this important surgical achievement by Dr. Rickman Godlee but of truly historical impact was the successful diagnosis and localization of the tumor based on neurological findings alone by the physician in charge of the case, Alexander Hughes Bennett. Together, Bennett and Godlee presented their report on A Case of Cerebral Tumor before the Royal Society of Medicine on May 12, 1885."" The patient, a man, by the name of Henderson, had suffered for 3 years from focal motor seizures...A neurologist, Alexander Hughes Bennett (1848-1901), basing his conclusions on the findings of a neurological examination, localized a brain tumor and recommended removal to the surgeon. Godlee made an incision over the rolandic area and removed the tumor through a small cortical incision. The patient survived the surgery with some mild weakness and did well, only to die a month later from infection. Bennett, the physician who made the diagnosis and localization, along with J. Hughlings Jackson and David Ferrier, two prominent British neurologists, observed this landmark operation. All of these physicians were extremely interested in whether the cerebral localization studies would provide necessary results in the operating theater. Other operations for intracranial tumor had been performed but were for extracerebral meningeal or osseous tumors. The ""first"" operation for a primary cerebral tumor by Godlee was meticulously described and well documented in the medical and popular press of the day and stimulated both professional and lay discussions of the topic that directly and indirectly led to further surgery on the cerebrum itself and the advent of modern neurosurgery. The original patient of Mr. Godlee died on the 28th postoperative day of apparent meningitis and secondary complications, but postmortem examination revealed no remnant of the excised glioma...Godlee was the first to remove an intracranial brain tumor of cancerous origin and deserves historical recognition in his own right.""
