The main body of work by painter Egon Schiele (1890 1918), who died at an early age, was produced within barely a decade. His famous nudes unwaver ingly probed the existential core of human experi ence. The paintings of Jenny Saville (* 1970 in Cam bridge) are no less intense in terms of their physicality and confrontational stance. This catalogue brings to gether the works of these two artists for the first time. Revealed is the stylistic and thematic proximity of the body-landscapes and portraits by the two young stars despite the decades separating their work and their varying use of the brush. The first monograph on Richard Smith, a key figure in the development of British art. Richard Smith (1931-2016) was one of the most original painters of his generation, and one of the most underrated. As Barbara Rose said of Smith's major Tate Gallery retrospective in 1975, he was 'at once in and out of touch with the currents of the mainstream . au courant and aloof at the same time.' That he latterly slipped under the radar to some extent is partly explained by his detachment from the mainstream as well as by his frequent switching of studios between England and the USA, although this helped charge his creative batteries. He is the only artist of his stature who has not been represented by a monograph, which the dazzling presentation of images in Richard Smith: Artworks now fulfils. It has been produced with the generous collaboration of the Richard Smith Foundation. Richard Smith: Artworks traces Smith's entire career, from the breakthrough lyrical abstraction of the early Pop-inflected paintings, through the radical shaped canvases and three-dimensional works that he produced in the 1960s, to the 'Kite' works beginning in 1972 and, eventually, his return to the flat canvas. As a Senior Curator at Tate, Dr Chris Stephens knew Smith well, and he contributes a wide-ranging introduction to Smith's art and life. Prof David Alan Mellor investigates and explains the Anglo-American cultural contexts that drove Smith's art, while Alex Massouras's two themed essays, 'Young and British' and 'From Motion Pictures to Flight', explore Smith's originality from fresh perspectives. The book is completed with an Afterword by its editor, Martin Harrison.

This monograph of Bassman's legendary work - the first ever published - presents the romantic, experimental visions, seen mostly in Harper's Bazaar, that brought a sophisticated new aesthetic to print photography. Yet the story of Bassman's life and newfound celebrity at age eight and the extraordinary tale of how her work survived are as remarkable as the images themselves. From the 1940s to the 1960s Bassman was at fashion's cutting edge, working as both art director and photographer. At Junior Bazaar she worked with young photographers like Richard Avedon, Robert Frank, Louis Faurer, Arnold Newman and Paul Himmel. Then, under Russian emigre and Modernist guru Alexey Brodovitch (and while using George Hoyningen-Huene's darkroom), Bassman started to shoot pictures herself - diffuse, moody images with an idiosyncratic vocabulary of gestures, and an unsettling edge. Bassman soon was in constant demand and, in addition to her editorial work, shot advertising campaigns for clients like Chanel and Balenciaga. By the 1970s, Bassman's interest in pure form began to clash with fashion's changing aesthetic. Her increasing disenchantment with fashion as an industry led her to abandon commercial photography for personal projects instead. In a bold attempt to free herself creatively from the past, she jettisoned forty years of negatives and prints - her life's work. Over twenty years later, luck resurrected a forgotten bag, brimful of hundreds of images. Now, Bassman is enjoying a resurgence at fashion's forefront, with exhibitions at museums and art galleries in New York, Paris, London, and Milan, several portfolios in the New York Times Magazine, the coveted Neiman Marcus campaign, and an upcoming 1997 retrospective exhibition at the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York, that plans to travel to Germany and Milan. Dramatic depictions of human forms ? writhing painfully, dissolving, wrestling or engulfing one another, seated or in motion ? are ubiquitous in the work of Francis Bacon (1909-1992), one of the most eminent painters of the 20th century. Bacon portrayed the ordeal of the vulnerable, defencelessly exposed body like no other artist of his generation. His individuals are usually alone, isolated from their surroundings, trapped in empty, windowless rooms or behind the bars of cages. Bacon?s figures act on stage-like platforms, doubled over in torment, sliding into formlessness. By wiping, scratching and erasures, Bacon converted the picture surface into a field of perpetual activity ? and in the process, created images of great forcefulness, sensibility and beauty. Bacon found his models not only in the history of art, but also in photographs of athletes, soccer players, or boxers in combat. He also betrayed a strong interest in the photographic sequences through which Eadweard Muybridge, in the later 19th century, registered the phases of a path of animal movement.
