L. de Boubers, 1768, in-4°, xxiii + 504 + 2 nn pp, 14 pl. engraved plates (numbered I-V,V,V, VI-XII) some folding, contemporary leather binding, raised and gilt decorated back, marbled endpapers, red edges. Top of spine and headcap have been expertly restored. Lower margin of first 4 leaves have a faint brown stain, but a fine/good copy. The functions of religious and civil statues in Egypt, Greece and Rome, with all kinds of interesting and amusing asides (e.g. on Russia, the Incas, the Rome prize...). His avowed subjects are the importance of ancient statues and the links between their origin and progress on the one hand and the creation, progress and customs of different cultures. Rare book of which only one edition is known. (Text in French.).
