‎ Ce manuscrit, qui porte l'annotation suivante en tête du premier feuillet « A passage from Their Spirit (written after visiting Rheims Cathedral August 1916) », est un extrait de son livre intitulé « Their Spirit - some impressions of the English and French during the summer of 1916 », (Houghton Mifflin Cie, 1916).La cathédrale de Reims fut bombardée dès le début des hostilités en 1914 et les dégâts causés par les tirs nourris d'obus furent impressionnants. La toiture du monument fut en partie ravagée par un feu qui débuta dans la tour nord avant de se répandre rapidement à la charpente qui fut réduite en cendres.VRobert Grant, arrivé sur les lieux deux ans plus tard (en 1916), témoigne des destructions qui firent de la cathédrale gothique un « monument martyr ».La première impression, éphémère, suscitée par la cathédrale le rassure ...it is less badly damaged than I feared...
