The work provides both the original French of the inscriptions in verse and a prose translation in English. ???LE RECUEIL DES INSCRIPTIONS was composed in 1558 by Estienne Jodelle, sometime member of the Pleiade, on commission from the city fathers of Paris for a celebration of the recapture of Calais from the English. In just over a week Jodelle drew up complete plans for the decoration of the Hotel de Ville in Paris and composed the inscriptions which were to accompany the required pictures, as well as the dramatic representations which were to follow the official banquet. This volume presents the authentic text of the LE RECUEIL DES INSCRIPTIONS and gives a full account of the celebration. In good condition.
