‎Natalia Ginzburg raconte son enfance et son adolescence : un père fantasque et une mère plaintive, des amis promis à la gloire ; Turin, l'antifascisme, les arrestations, la guerre, la déportation, l'assassinat d'un mari aimé. Tandis que les parents parlent et résument le monde en quelques jugements lapidaires, les enfants découvrent la résistance de la vie qui leur oppose les énigmes meurtrissantes de l'amour, de la guerre, de la mort. Le comique des mots contraste avec le tragique des événements. On n'avait jamais raconté avec autant de finesse et de malice le malentendu qui sépare les générations. On n'avait jamais peint avec autant d'humour et de tendresse la difficulté des rapports humains. — "Natalia Ginzburg nous intéresse à bien des égards. De père juif triestain, de mère protestante milanaise, elle a vu son mari, membre important de la Résistance italienne, mourir torturé par les Allemands en 1944. Elle a traduit, en italien, de Marcel Proust, “Du côté de chez Swann” et “Le Silence de la Mer”, de Vercors. “Les Mots de la Tribu” lui ont valu un prix littéraire, le prix Strega (1963). Nous sommes ici devant une autobiographie où l'auteur raconte, avec son talent d'écrivain qui est grand, son enfance et son adolescence dans une famille non-conformiste, antifasciste, résistante, la « tribu », c'est ici le petit milieu piémontais qui a encadré la jeunesse de Natalia. Les « mots de la tribu », ce sont les formules, les jugements de ses parents sur le monde. La vie, qu'elle s'appelle l'amour, la guerre, les menaces de la mort, c'est le monde au delà des formules, là où commence le tragique et l'informulable. Ce récit vivant intéressera tous ceux qui n'ont pas oublié des événements encore récents ou qui chercheront à les connaître tels qu'ils ont été vécus de l'intérieur en quelque sorte, par ceux-là même qui ont été atteints et mutilés par eux." Certains se souvenaient des Mots de la tribu (Grasset, 1966), cette autobiographie subtile et comique qui file à toute vitesse, inventant une langue, et ne parlant que des autres : sa famille juive dans les années 1920, son Turin dans les années 1930, la Résistance au quotidien, les années mussoliniennes. Nous savions qu’elle avait été mariée avec Leone Ginzburg, un intellectuel antifasciste qui créa, avec Giulio Einaudi, la maison d’édition légendaire du même nom.
