" Paris, Gil Blas, 1891 - 1902, in-folio, 38 x 27 cm, issues of 8 pp, first and last page are printed in colour. Bound in 6 uniform red half leather volumes with gilt titles on spine. Binding with some traces of use, but still in good condition. The set comprises 547 consecutive issues: from issue 1 (30 May 1891) till issue 52 of the 12th year (26 Dec. 1902). Another 34 issues were published which are not present here. Exceptionally long run of this satirical French ''Belle Epoque'' magazine. Considering that the publication was printed on paper of below standard quality this set is in excellent condition. Only a few issues show some small marginal tears due to careless handling of later owners. One issue lacks at one leaf an upper corner, with minimal loss of text (no image loss). In all: a very fine copy of a rare long run. bn;j The main illustrator of Gil Blas was Steinlen but all great illustrators of that period participated at some time: Albert Guillaume, Caran D'Ache, Legrand, Léandre, Bac, Chéret. ...Literary texts are included from de Maupassant, Verlaine, Mirbeau, Zola, Daudet, Courteline, Villiers de l'Isle Adam, Mallarmé..."
