(mm. 335x270), elegante legatura in p. marocchino verde riccamente decorato a secco e in oro ai piatti, dorso a cordoni con fregi e titolo oro (restaurato), fini risguardi in velluto verde con dentelles dorate (restaur. le cerniere interne), tagli in oro, 2 cc.b., XIV,(2),178 pp.num.; il testo è introdotto da: una dedica a his Majesty George the Fourth - Preface by the translator, by the author, and contents (mancano 4 pp. con l'elenco degli abbonati). Questo "picturesque tour" è ampiamente descritto with scenes of remarkable events, and of popular traditions.Il volume è accompagnato da una mappa a colori con il corso del fiume Reno from Mentz to Cologne and the course of the Maine and the Labn, realizzata dall'Arch. C.F. Ulrich, incisa da W. Bartlett e più volte ripieg., con relativa descrizione; è importante soprattutto per le 24 bellissime tavole, da disegni originali del noto artista M. Schuetz, e incise all'acquatinta da D. Havell e T. Sutherland, con splendida coloritura a mano d'epoca, che raffigurano vedute di Mentz, Biebrich (residenza estiva dei Duchi di Nassau), Johannesberg, la città di Bingen, il castello di Fuerstenberg, il castello di Pfalz e la città di Kaub, la pesca del salmone a Lurley, Coblenza, Bornhofen, Colonia e tanti altri siti. Le filigrane delle tavole sono datate 1816-17 e quelle del testo 1817, rendendo questo esempl. appartenente a una delle prime tirature."Prima edizione inglese" di questo affascinante viaggio lungo il Reno per le superbe vedute delle località attraversate dal Barone von Gerning (1767-1837) che ne ha scritto la storia (l'originale in tedesco fu pubblicato a Wiesbaden nel 1819),Cfr. Title page with a closed tear in the fore-margin, very occasional slight offsetting and toning of text, else a very nice and clean copy. Plates 1, 4, 11 , 13 , 17 , 21 , 23 are unnumbered (thus from the first issue); text watermarked II S&S, 1817 , 1818 and 1819 ; plates watermarked ''Turkey Mills 1818 ?''. Abbey Travel item 217. Tooley item 234. This is a fine copy of one of the quintessential English colour plate books and one of the finest Rhine-Albums ever published. The first edition, in German, appeared in 1819, without illustrations. Schütz designed for this English illustrated edition some beautiful views of Bacharach , Bingen , Boppard , Braubach , Johannisberg , Koblenz , Köln, Mainz , Oberwezel, St. Goar ..[...].."
