Machines et inventions approuvées par l'Académie royale des Sciences, depuis son établissement jusqu'à présent; avec leur description.

Très rare édition in-folio. Cette fabuleuse documentation sur les techniques et les sciences en France au XVIIIe siècle est magnifiquement illustrée par 404 planches hors-texte, gravées sur cuivre montrant plus de 500 machines. L'ouvrage a été publié une première fois en 7 volumes in-quarto (6 volumes en 1735 et un 7e volume en 1777 qui manque la plupart du temps). Une note de l'éditeur au verso du titre, précise qu'il en a tiré "un petit nombre" au format in-folio, pour les amateurs qui voulait joindre ces "Machines et inventions", à la "Description des Arts & Métiers", publiée par l'Académie des Sciences dans ce même format. Jean-Gaffin Gallon (1706-1775) avait été chargé par l'Académie des Sciences de publier les descriptions des machines et inventions. Près de 500 machines sont donc ici décrites et illustrées, dans tous les domaines : mécanique, hydraulique, horlogerie, instruments d'arpentage, machines à calculer, instruments d'astronomie et de mathématiques... Les planches sont numérotées de 1 à 495, avec 105 bis, 177 bis, 329 bis, 436, 495 bis. Les 197-198 et 493-494 sont ensembles, la 245 est notée 246, la 341 porte 3 gravures. 4 planches sont dépliantes. La planche n° 453, illustrant la montre à équation, n'a jamais été reliée dans cet exemplaire. Elle existait dans l'édition in-4 mais peut-être a-t-elle été oubliée ou perdue pour cette édition in-folio. Une édition in-folio qui n'a eu visiblement aucun succès commercial, puisque nous n'avons pas trouvé d'autre exemplaire dans les bibliothèques publiques (Ccfr et Worldcat). Reliures frottées, dorure du dos légèrement différents entre les deux premiers et les suivants, mais bon exemplaire dans une reliure décorative et solide. /// 4 volumes in-folio de VIII, 72 pp., pl. 1 à 163 / (2), 73-130 pp., 164-293 pl. / (2), 131-203 pp., 294-430 pl. / (2), 96 pp., 431-495 pl. This fabulous documentation on techniques and sciences in France in the 18th century is magnificently illustrated with 404 hors-texte plates, engraved on copper, showing more than 500 machines. The work was first published in 7 quarto volumes (6 volumes in 1735 and a 7th volume in 1777 which is mostly missing). A note from the editor on the verso of the title, specifies that he printed "a small number" in the folio format, for the amateurs who wanted to join these "Machines and inventions", to the "Description des Arts & Métiers", published by the Academy of Sciences in this same size. Jean-Gaffin Gallon (1706-1775) had been charged by the Academy of Sciences to publish the descriptions of machines and inventions. Nearly 500 machines are thus described and illustrated here, in all fields: mechanics, hydraulics, clock-making, surveying instruments, calculating machines, astronomical and mathematical instruments... The plates are numbered from 1 to 495, with 105 bis, 177 bis, 329 bis, 436, 495 bis. The 197-198 and 493-494 are together, the 245 is noted 246, the 341 bears 3 engravings. 4 plates are folding. Plate 453, illustrating the equation watch, has never been bound in this copy. It existed in the in-4 edition but may have been forgotten or lost for this edition. This in-folio edition was obviously not successful commercially, since we have not found any other copy in public libraries (Ccfr and Worldcat). Paris, chez Gabriel Martin, 1735. 4to (262 x 210 mm). Uniformly bound in seven nice contemporary full calf bindings with five raised bands and richly gilt spines. Light wear to extremities. Vol. 4 with lower compartment of spine missing part of the leather. Internally with light occassional marginal miscolouring. Vol. 5 with damp stain affecting lower outer corner of first 14 leaves. An overall fine complete set with all half titles and 433 plates (1-429, plus 105*, 177*, 329* and 2 additional plates numbered 341, but 197-8 on one sheet). First edition of this important and extensive work containing both descriptions and engravings of all the inventions approved from the beginning of the French “l'Academie Royale des Sciences” in 1666. “Thus, it documents the increasing interest in technology during this period in France. The devices are simply described in chronolopgical order. They cover all the areas then known in arts, sciences, engineering and manufacturing” (Erwin Tomash). It constitute one of the most important historical sources for the study of the manufactures of the late 17th and early 18th century. The inventors included Godin and Outhier - who were involved in the expedition to measure the arc of the meridian with their instruments -, Dortous de Mairan, Cassini, Clairaut le père, l'abbé Nollet, Huygens, Perrault, Gauger, Le Maire, De La Hire, Morland,and in particular the arithmetic machines of Pascal (vol.4, plates 262-263), Lépine (vol.4, plates 259-261), and Hillerin de Boistissandeau (vol.5, plates 341-343). Gallon (1706-75), a French engineer, was commissioned by the Academy to edit the descriptions made of the machinery that they approved. Edition originale de cet important recueil sur les lois forestières de la France depuis le Moyen Âge jusqu'au XVIIIe siècle, qui s'appuie sur l'ordonnance de Louis XIV de 1669. De Gallon était un ancien officier de la maîtrise de Rochefort. Il contient également deux importants chapitres sur la chasse et la pêche (au tome II) conférés au code des chasses de 1669.
