‎The first edition of Gadamer's main work, ""Truth and Method"", the aim of which is to uncover the nature of human understanding. A main work of philosophical hermeneutics as well as 20th century continental philosophy in general.Hans-Georg Gadamer (1900 - 2002) is the decisive figure in the development of twentieth century hermeneutics. He is without doubt one of the most important thinkers of the twentieth century, and he has had an enormous impact on philosophy, theology and aesthetics, acquiring the greatest respect and reputation in Germany and the rest of Europe, which has been far from restricted to academic circles. ""Truth and Method"" is intended to be a description of what we consciously or unconsciously always do, when we interpret things. ""My real concern was and is philosophic: not what we do or what we ought to do, but what happens to us over and above our wanting and doing"" (""Truth and Method"", 2nd ed. ‎In zijn hoofdwerk Waarheid en methode verzet Hans-Georg Gadamer zich tegen de opvatting dat kennis en waarheid alleen bereikbaar zijn via streng wetenschappelijke methodes. In plaats daarvan verdedigt hij de praktijk van het interpreteren, die zowel in het dagelijks leven als in de wetenschap het onvermijdelijke uitgangspunt vormt van de zoektocht naar kennis en waarheid. Sleutelbegrip bij Gadamer is Verstehen (verstaan): ?direct deelhebben aan het leven, zonder de theoretische bemiddeling door het begrip?. Verstaan roept, meer dan begrijpen, het beeld op van de luisteraar die zijn oor leent aan degene met wie of datgene waarmee hij in gesprek is. Het gesprek dient voor Gadamer als model voor de omgang met de ander, met teksten, met de overlevering, kortom: met alles wat verstaan wil worden. Met Waarheid en methode legde Gadamer in 1960 de grondslag van de hedendaagse hermeneutische ?loso?e. In de vertaling van Mark Wildschut is deze klassieker nu voor het eerst in het Nederlands beschikbaar. ‎
