Het boek beschrijft de 10 jaren van groots opgezette expedities, politieke misleiding en het tegen elkaar uitspelen van de Europese grootmachten, die vooraf gingen aan het uitroepen van de nieuwe staat in 1885. Dankzij zijn geld, zijn sluwheid en zijn doorzettingsvermogen slaagde Leopold II in zijn opzet: de creatie van zijn "eigen" kolonie, Kongo Vrijstaat (het latere Zaïre van Mobutu en het huidige Congo). Dick Foeken is verbonden aan de univ. van Leiden. In 1992 doctoreerde hij aan de univ van A'dam op De opdeling van Centraal-Afrika (1875-1885).‎
