‎First appearance of an importent paper announcing the first formulation of the complete Lorentz-transformation and with the first prediction of time dilation. ""It seems churlish however to deny that Larmor had gained an importent, if limited insight into time dilation, two years before Lorentz's striking similar and independent insight of 1899.""(Harvey R. brown in ""Physical relativity"", p. 61). - The paper also presents the ""Larmor formula"".It's notable that Larmor was the first who recognized that some sort of time dilation is a consequence of the Loretz transformation as well, because individual electrons describe corresponding parts of their orbits in times shorter for the [rest] system in the ratio 1/y.Parallel to the development of Lorentz ether theory, Larmor published the complete Lorentz transformations in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society in 1897 (in the paper offered) some two years before Hendrik Lorentz (1899, 1904) and eight years before Albert Einstein (1905). Larmor predicted the phenomenon of time dilation, at least for orbiting electrons, and verified that the FitzGerald-Lorentz contraction (length contraction) should occur for bodies whose atoms were held together by electromagnetic forces. In his book Aether and Matter (1900), he again presented the Lorentz transformations, time dilation and length contraction (treating these as dynamic rather than kinematic effects). Larmor opposed Albert Einstein's theory of relativity (though he supported it for a short time). Larmor rejected both the curvature of space and the special theory of relativity, to the extent that he claimed that an absolute time was essential to astronomy.Larmor held that matter consisted of particles moving in the aether. Larmor believed the source of electric charge was a ""particle"" (which as early as 1894 he was referring to as the electron). Thus, in what was apparently the first specific prediction of time dilation, he wrote ""... individual electrons describe corresponding parts of their orbits in times shorter for the [rest] system in the ratio (1 - v2/c2)1/2"" (in the paper offered).‎

Tales of the Jazz Age includes two masterpieces: May Day which depicts a party at a popular club in New York that becomes a night of revelry during which former soldiers and an affluent group of young people start an anti-Bolshevik demonstration that results in an attack on a leftist newspaper office and The Diamond as Big as the Ritz, a fantastic satire of the selfishness endemic to the wealthy and their undying pursuit to preserve that way of life. These stories meld Fitzgerald’s fascination with wealth with an awareness of a larger world, creating a subtle social critique. With his discerning eye, Fitzgerald elucidates the interactions of the young people of post-World War I America who, cut off from traditions, sought their place in the modern world amid the general hysteria of the period that inaugurated the age of jazz. Fitzgerald wrote a series of excellent stories which inexplicably have been ignored or dismissed lightly by Fitzgerald scholars, and that cream of his achievement as a writer of short fiction was presented to the public in four impressive authorized collections: Flappers and Philosophers (1920), Tales of the Jazz Age (1922), All the Sad Young Men (1926) and Taps at reveille (1935). (Cette "Edition ordinaire" n'était généralement pas signée, mais cet exemplaire l'était). Relié dans une jolie reliure demi-cuir par Jean Petit. Plats marbrés, cuir brun foncé et joli dos orné de dorures. Texte en français. Placés sur le devant du volume, se trouvent la couverture souple originale et le prospectus / spécimen de l'éditeur de 1910. Il comprend la feuille publicitaire avec des détails de colophon, une deuxième copie de la page de titre décorée de dorure, l'une des planches illustrées et quelques exemples de pages. Il y a aussi une brève vie de Kháyyám, avant le colophon numéroté contenant la signature de Dulac. Puis le titre propre. Traduit en français par Edmond Dulac, à partir de la traduction de Fitzgerald de 1859 - du persan vers l'anglais - d'une sélection de quatrains attribués à Omar Kháyyám; "Le poète astronome de Perse". 21 belles planches en couleurs renversées, (Les 20 demandées et un duplicata dans le prospectus), chacune avec son protège-tissu légendé d'origine. Le livre est en très bon état. avec juste un peu de frottement sur la reliure. Très légères rousseurs aux premières pages. Non paginé. 300 x 240 mm‎

‎A beautiful edition in French, printed on velin paper, # 576 of 700, signed by Edmond Dulac. (This "Edition ordinaire" was not generally signed, but this copy is). Bound up in a lovely half leather binding by Jean Petit. Marbled boards, with dark brown leather and an attractive gilt decorated spine. Text in French. Laid in to the front of the volume, is the original soft cover, and the publisher's prospectus / specimen from 1910. This comprises the advertising leaf with colophon details, a second coy of the gilt decorated title page, one of the illustrated plates and some sample pages. There is also a brief life of Kháyyám, before the numbered colophon containing Dulac's signature. Then the title proper. Translated in to French by Edmond Dulac, from Fitzgerald's 1859 translation - Persian to English - of a selection of quatrains attributed to Omar Kháyyám; "The Astronomer Poet of Persia". 21 beautiful tipped-in colour plates, (The 20 called for and a duplicate in the prospectus), each with its original captioned tissue-guard. Book is in a very good condition. with just a little rubbing to the binding. Very slight foxing to initial pages. Unpaginated. 300 x 240 mm (11Ÿ x 9œ inches).‎
