Abondamment illustré de 79 planches en hors-texte la plupart contenant deux vues à chaque fois. Environ 169 gravures dessinées par Shepherd et gravées par Watkins. Rousseurs éparses. Demi-chagrin maroquiné à coins vert foncé, dos à cinq nerfs, titre or, tranches dorées. Petits frottements au dos et coins émoussés.‎

Ce dernier (1792-1864) est connu pour ces très nombreuses peintures de l'architecture de Londres ; ses vues sont toutes animées de scènes et de personnages apportant un peu de vie à la rudesse des représentations archéologiques des grands bâtiments de la capitale britanique. Il avait publié en 1827 "Améliorations métropolitaines, ou Londres au XIXe siècle", il poursuivit en 1829 par cet ouvrage sur Edimbourg et un autre sur Bath et Bristol. Préface signée de Jhon Britton. ‎

(1850 ?), in-8°, xlii pp + 316 pp + 40 steel-engraved plates, bound in red blindtooled cloth, with richly gilt decorated smooth spine (with a view of a train, Saint-Paul's and a ship), all edges gilt, bound by E. Smith of 5 Ivy lane , Paternoster Row (his small printed label on the last paste down). Binding nicely preserved. Interior of the book with foxing spots throughout, though mainly on the plates. The book has neither index nor table of contents. It was issued as such. It is a stereotyped edition and commonly called ''The Shepherd's London''. There exists a sequel, ''London in the nineteenth century'', which is not present here (see Bernard Adams ; Shepherd and Elmes's Metropolitan Improvements 1827-30- Text Series 154 as catalogued in London Illustrated 1604-1851)."‎
