" Ratisbonae (Regensburg) , Neo Eboraci (New York), & Cincinnatii. Suptibus et Typis Friderici Pustet, 1886, 4 vols in-8°, (18 cm). [1] Pars Hiemalis, lxvi pp + (2)nn pp (illustration) + 636 pp + (384)pp + (xii) pp + 26 pp (Off. Propr. Valleguidonensis). [2] Pars Aestiva, xxx pp + (2)nn pp (illustration) + 720 pp + (434)pp + (xiv) pp + 41 pp (Off. Propr. Valleguidonensis). [3] Pars Autumnalis, xxx pp + (2)nn pp (illustration) + 588 pp + (399)pp + (xiii) pp + 17 pp (Off. Propr. Valleguidonensis). [4] Pars Verna, xxx pp + (2)nn pp (illustration) + 700 pp + (463)pp + (xiii) pp + 22 pp (Off. Propr. Valleguidonensis). Complete set with over 4644 pp ! The Laval parts (Valleguidonensis) have been published by A. Mary-Beauchene in Laval (1884); and printed by Mame in Tours. The head work is entirely printed in red & black, each page within a red typobraphical borderline. [Binding]. Uniformy bound in full red morocco, raised spines with gilt titles, all edges gilt, Gilt fillet on the board edges, Both covers with the supra libro of bishop Victor Maréchal with his motto ''Vita et Spes''. A splendid set, perfectly preserved. [Provenance]. From a calligraphed entry on the half-title of the first part we learn that the ''Breviarium'' was presented by the priests of the ''Canton de Montfort L'Amaury'' which was a part of the diocese of Versailles. This occured most probably on the occasion of the ordination of Victor Maréchal as bishop of the diocese of Laval; in Versailles on 25 july 1887. The unfortunate bishop however died within less than 2 months of his ordination (died 21 september 1887). He probably hardly ever touched his breviarium gift. Two further Latin notes reveal that the book was received by Aug. Maria Batard, priest in Laval who donated the work in 1917 to the monastary of Saint Julian in Chateau Gonthier. A third note states that the work belonged afterwards to Mother Superior of the nunnery of ''Misericorda Iesu'' in the monatary's hospital. (For the supra libro; see Aymond de Saint-Saud : ''Armorial des prélats français du XIX siècle''.) A beautifull and finely preserved example of an expensive liturgical book of the 19th c. Roman Catholic Church. It demonstrates, in a way, the resurgence of the French Church after the devastating blow of the French Revolution."

The missal, always in Latin, was the most important book in the Roman catholic liturgy and served during mass (Eucharist celebration). It was made universal for the Church at the Council of Trent (1545-1563) and virtually made redundant at the Second Vatican Council in the 1960's. Finely preserved missal in a spectacular and wel preserved silver bindin."

" Antverpiae, (Antwerpen), Ex Officina Christophori Plantini, 1574, in-folio, 32 x 21,5 cm. 6 parts with a total of 718 pp. Voet n° 1685. Collation *4, **-****8, A-S8, T4, V6, Aa-Gg8, a-k8, l4, AA-GG8, +-++4, +++2. Collation against Voet reveals that this copy is complete but for 6 leaves . The missing leaves are: A1 (pp1-2) ; B4-5 (pp. 23-26) ;T4 (canon plate) ; V5-V6 (pp 305-308). Condition description: title with thumbing and a hole repaired (no loss of text), Corner of leaf C7 missing, text replaced in manuscript . Contemporary notes in the margin of e.g. leaf ****3 made illegible. Leaves V1-4 (canon part) with traces of use and thumbing (heavy on pp. 304), some pages of the canon part mounted. Apart from these defects, on the whole still a good copy. The book has been rebound in full calf (end 19th-beginning 20th c. ?). Title label on decorated spine.. Entirely printed in red & black, in two colums, with many woodcut illustrations (some full page) by e.g. M. Hemskerck, P. Galle, Pieter van der Borcht, and cutters Antoon van Leest, Arnold Nicolai, Cornelis Muller. Very few 16th c. missals have survived. They were in daily use for celebrating the Romam Catholic mass (hence the worn pages of the canon part). Most of these books were either removed when completely worn, or put out of use when liturgy changed. When Voet compiled his bibliograpy he could trace two copies of this edition (one in his museum in Antwerp , the other in Munich Bayerische Staatsbibliotheek). The last 30 year another 5 copies have come alight - thanks to Internet. (Pettegree n° 10780 - USTC 406072). Approx. 400 copies were printed, most of these were shipped to Spain. This missal was also printed with copper engravings instead of woodcuts. Allthough ca. 1200 copies were printed with copper engravings not one copy survived."

(Tail turn-in of one volume slightly torn, one vol. very slightly loose in binding, some slight soiling and thumbingat a few pages but still a nice and impressive set in a contemporary luxury binding). A rare complete set of a late 18th century liturgical edition by the Antwerp Plantin Press, illustrated with full page copperengravings, printed throughout in red and black, with vignettes and tailends printed either in red or black from woodengravings. The breviary was one of the most important liturgical books in the Roman catholic church. These in-4° editions served for the daily readings by the religious communities. Because of this daily manipulating and the rather regularly changings of the texts, which led to the discarting of outdated versions; complete and good copies of pre-1800 breviaries are very rare, even more so in a luxury binding."
"2. " Anverpiae, (Antwerpen) Ex Architypographia Plantiniana, M.D.CC.LIX. (1759), in-4°, 23 x 18 cm, title with copper engraved vignet + (41) + copper engraved frontispiece + 870 pp + (2)(index, printer's mark) with 56 full-page copper engravings (with numerous woodengraved intials, black leather binding, on the covers a triple blindtooled fillet, raised back, gilt title on back, two copper clasps, strikingly crisp copy without any stains or wear (fully unused). Large and unusually richly illustrated officium. These liturgical books of the Roman Church were ment for private prayer and therefore usually published in smaller formats. The printing house of Plantin developped the tradition of printing luxuriously editions under the influence of the Infante Isabella in the early 17th century. She subsized a first in-4° edition in 1601 with 41 full page engravings. There were several reprints in the 17th & 18th century. See catalogue D.Imhoff; De Boekillustraties ten tijde van de Moretussen pp.98-99). Perhaps the main part of this book with the illustrations has been printed much earlier, the title and the calender being added in 1756 (?)."

Perfectly preserved luxurious mid 19th century French binding on a quite rare devotional edition, kept in the original silk lined box (with the same initials)..
" Antwerpen, Christoffel van Ruremund, (on behalf of) Michiel Hillen van Hoochstraten en Willem Vorsterman, 18th October 1527, (sic 1257 on title), in-folio, 318 x202 mm, printed in two columns, printed throughout in red and black. Title with central woodcut and border consisting of 14 smaller woodcuts + (1)(tabula festorum mobilum) + (12)(kalendarium) + (2)(accidentia misse) + 266 lvs (foliated; i-cxxviii; 14 non fol.; i-lxxxii; i-xlii), leaves 143-144 printed on vellum,143b being a full page woodcut (canonplate) in contemporary coloring, 67 small woodcuts in the text, contains also 4 leaves with printed music; black notes on 4-lined red staves, (this is one of the earliest known music printings in the Low Countries where staves and notes are printed separately). 19th century half leather binding, raised gilt back, all edges painted red (binding signed J.Burio, Gand). Exceptionally crisp and clean unused copy. USTC 437374 . Nijhoff-Kronenburg N°3539. Only three copies of which two in Northern France and one in Belgium (Mechelen, Groot Seminarie, now K.U.L. Library). The Missal, containing the liturgy or office of the mass in the Roman Catholic Church is one of the most important liturgical books. Because of the frequent liturgical changes and the daily use of the missal, particularly the canon part, old copies in good shape are very rare. Most copies were either completely worn or discarded as being obsolete. This edition, for the diocese of Tournai (which comprised the County of Flanders), is the second printing. Of the printer Christoffel of Ruremond it is known that he died in Westminster prison in 1531. He was arrested in England because he sold the New Testament in English, translated by Tyndale to a bookbinder called John Row (see Y. Foxe, Ecclesiasticall History...London 1576); see also Anne Rouzet, Dictionnaire pp.193-194. USTC N° 437374 .."
