This work constitutes the first proper monograph on the great Islamic philosopher, Ibn Rush, also called Averroes, who is considered the greatest commentator on the works of Aristotle, and it is principally because of this work that the great philosopher and scientist is seriously appreciated in Europe today. Besides dealing with Averroes himself, Renan studies the development and different branches of Averroism, focusing on the Jewish, Scholastic and Paduan ones. His focus on the Paduan Averroism (16th century) in this work has meant that Renaissance philosophy was finally given a role of its own in the history of philosophy, -it is with this work that the philosophy of the Renaissance is taken seriously in the study of philosophy.""Memoirs on semitic languages and on the study of Greek in the Middle Ages were crowned by the Académie in 1848 and 1849 but do not seem to have been published. Son histoire a donc l’intérêt d’une expérience. […] Impossible d’éviter « la couleur locale » ; l’action est un épisode de la Révolution française : il faut bien jouer en costumes du temps et recréer autour des personnages le climat de la Terreur. De fait, même si la fable inventée par Renan n’est pas une histoire vraie, elle est une histoire vraisemblable. Renan insistait volontiers sur ce point qui distingue le quatrième drame des trois précédents. « Je ne connais, écrit-il un jour, aucun récit du temps de la Révolution qui présente la donnée même que j’ai essayé de mettre en action dans l’Abbesse de Jouarre. » Mais, « quant à l’état psychologique des prisons du temps de la Terreur, et au développement que prirent, dans ce milieu terrible, les intrigues amoureuses, je n’ai rien dit qui ne soit tout à fait conforme à l’histoire. Quelques jours après la bataille de Fleurus, le 25 juin 1794, Julie est en prison dans l’ancien Collège du Plessis ; elle revient du Tribunal révolutionnaire ; l’exécution est pour le prochain matin. L’homme qui l’aime et qu’elle aime, le marquis d’Arcy, est dans la même prison et sera, demain, dans la même charrette. Les vœux de l’abbesse les avaient séparés : la mort imminente les délie de tout devoir […] Or, le lendemain matin, le nom de Julie Constance de Saint-Florent n’est pas sur la liste des condamnés qui doivent partir pour l’échafaud […]. » (H. First edition, numbered copies, of both works. The ""Lettres Intimes"" is number 5 of fifteen copies printed on Japan-paper: ""Il a été tiré de cet ouvrage quinze exemplaires sur papier Impérial du Japon. Tous numérotés. No. 5."" ""Nouvelles Lettres Intimes"" is number four of 50 copies on Holland-paper: ""Il a été tiré de cet ouvrage cinquante exemplaires sur papier de Hollande numérotés. No. 4.""Ernest Renan (1823-1892) was a French philologist, philosopher and historian. His father died when he was aged five, and his mother wanted him to become a priest. Until he was about 16 years old, he was trained by the Church, but due to his investigative and truth-seeking nature as well as his studies (e.g. Hebrew), he was in doubt as to the historical truth of the Scriptures, and with the help of his sister he chose his own path in life. ""He studied intensively the languages of the Bible and filled a number of minor academic positions, frequently encountering difficulties because of the heterodoxy and outspokenness of his religious opinions."" (Printing and the Mind of Man 352). In 1840 he began studying philosophy and later philology, in 1847 he took his degree as Agrégé de Philosophie and became master at the Lycée of Vendome. After having returned from a mission to Italy in the year 1850 where he gathered material for his historical-philosophical masterpiece, ""Averroës et l'Averroisme"", he was offered employment at the ""Bibliothèque Nationale"" (at the manuscript department). In 1861 he was chosen to become professor of Hebrew at the Collège de France, but because the emperor refused to ratify the appointment (inspired by the Clerical party), he was not established in the chair untill 1870. In 1878 he was elected for the Academy. Renan is considered a scolar of the greatest excellence and an impressive writer. Renan's closest confidante was his sister, Henriette, who helped him quit the clerical carrier. They helped eachother financially, travelled together (e.g. on archaeological expeditions) and lived together for many years of their lives. His widely famous work, ""Vie de Jésus"" is dedicated to her, and their correspondence is very interesting and catching.

On y relève, dès les premières lignes, la phrase suivante : « Ces pages ne sont pas faites pour le public et ne lui seront pas livrées. » En 1883, dans la préface de ses Souvenirs d’Enfance et de Jeunesse, Ernest Renan s’exprimait ainsi : « En septembre 1862, un an après la mort de cette précieuse amie [ma sœur Henriette], j’écrivis, pour le petit nombre des personnes qui l’avaient connue, un opuscule consacré à son souvenir. Il n’a été tiré qu’à cent exemplaires. Ma sœur était si modeste, elle avait tant d’aversion pour le bruit du monde, que j’aurais cru la voir, de son tombeau, m’adressant des reproches, si j’avais livré ces pages au public. [...] Cet opuscule ne sera donc réimprimé qu’après ma mort. Peut-être pourra-t-on y joindre alors quelques lettres de mon amie, dont je ferai moi-même par avance le choix. » Premier tirage public très peu courant, fort rare en tirage de tête sur Japon.

Note : Textes arabes en appendice. - Index..............Huitième Edition du premier livre de Renan, l'ouvrage fondateur qui a placé l'étude de la philosophie de la Renaissance sur la carte philosophique et a valu à Renan un doctorat en lettres. Cet ouvrage constitue la première monographie sur le grand philosophe islamique Ibn Rush, également appelé Averroès, qui est considéré comme le plus grand commentateur des travaux dAristote. Cest principalement à cause de cet ouvrage que le grand philosophe et scientifique est sérieusement apprécié. L'Europe aujourd'hui. En plus de s'occuper d'Averroès lui-même, Renan étudie le développement et les différentes branches de l'averroisme, en se concentrant sur les théories juive, scolastique et padoue. Son intérêt pour l'averroïsme padouan (XVIe siècle) dans cet ouvrage signifie que la philosophie de la Renaissance a finalement été investie d'un rôle spécifique dans l'histoire de la philosophie. Exemplaire enrichi de DEUX LETTRES AUTOGRAPHES SIGNÉES, l'une d'Anatole FRANCE, à en-tête imprimé "La Béchellerie / St Cyr-sur-Loire/(Indre-et-Loire)" (1 page) adressée à "Mon cher Noël", l'autre d'Ernest RENAN adressée à Monsieur Eugène Manuel, datée «Paris, 31 janvier 1879 » (1 page 1/2 sur deux feuillets avec encadrement de bordure noire) avec enveloppe timbrée conservée. Cette dernière est une lettre de recommandation en faveur de Joseph Halévy qui «fait vraiment honneur à la communauté israélite ». DEUX PORTRAITS HORS-TEXTE gravés sur papier Japon, en ocre pour celui d'Ernest Renan et en vert pour celui d'Anatole France. JOINT à l'exemplaire un cahier broché de 8 pages intitulé "Lointains souvenirs offerts à la statue d'Ernest Renan" : ce texte, extrait du "Journal des Débats du 12 septembre 1903", aurait été rédigé par Émile Gebhart.
