‎BOEHME Johannes - Damiao de GOIS ::‎

Reference : 56190

‎Collection of two 16th c. Lyonese imprints : [1] Mores, Leges, et Ritus omnium Gentium...cum Indice locupletissimo. (by Boehme) . [2] Fides, Religio moresque Aethiopum..(by de Gois - or Goes).‎

‎" [1] Lugduni (Lyon ) , Apud Ioan Tornasium, 1582, format in-16°, 374 pp + (38) nn pp (index) ; USTC 141954. [2] (Lyon, Jean de Tournes et Guillaume Gazeau), s.d. (1561), in-8°, 93 pp + (3) nn pp (2 blank, 1 with the printer's device ''Nescit Labi Virtus''). USTC 124484. S. von Gültlingen Tome IX pp. 218:506. Both works bound together in a contemporary full vellum binding, manuscript title on spine. The first work with title page with a wood engraved illustrated typographical border. With the manuscript ex-libris of ''Joannis Schey''. Title page with a small hole outside the text, most leaves very slightly and evenly browned, but a very fine copy.. The first work is an early edition of one of the first studies on folklore. The first edition was published in 1535. The second work by de Gois is very rare, only 2 copies located by the USTC ( one in Portugal, the other in Wolfenbüttel). Our copy has retained the circular wood-engraved printer's mark of De Tournes (on lv. ii6 recto). The book is one of the first to deal with Ethiopian Christianity (very much out of favor in our time). The author has strong connections with the Netherlands. He resided in Antwerp to further Portugese business intrests. His mother was of Flemish descend and he married a Flemish woman (Joana van Hargen). As a humlanist he studied in Padua and Louvain. He was befriended with Erasmus. His involvement with the Netherlands was such that in 1542 he led the defense of the city of Louvain against the French besiegers.."‎
