‎Hardback three quarter dark leather with marbled boards, with matching endpapers. Gilt titles to spine. Top edge gilt. No date but circa 1865. Date of publication suggested by the Bodleian Library. Scarce in this format. Fairy tale by Charles Perrault, rewritten and illustrated by Cruikshank. Boards slightly rubbed. Original soft covers are bound in. Six illustrations with tissue guards. 30 pages, 6 unnumbered leaves of plates. Slight rubbing to the edges of the spine. The binding has split to the inside rear hinge, so that the book block falls away - but is still held in place (see photograph). Front end paper is reinforced with archival tape. 180 x 140 mm (7 x 5œ inches).‎

‎Signed by Cruikshank with inscription to R.H. Barham, the author of Ingoldsby Legends (under the Pseudonym Thomas Ingoldsby). Original buckram with gilt titles and design to front board. yellow end papers. armorial bookplate of Lord Vernon (MP and supporter of the 1832 reform bill) to the front paste down. Cruikshank's signature is to blank page between end paper and half title (possibly an insertion). The verso of this leaf has an advert for Cruikshank's Table book pasted to it. The rest of the book is in good, clean condition, with no significant flaws. Included are a few loose clippings of Cruikshank's, including a title leaf from issue 1 of the serial of the Omnibus. 250 by 160mm (9Ÿ by 6Œ inches). Vi, 300 pp. 16 page publisher's catalogue tipped into rear. Enclosed is a C1970 booksellers card-index entry and a sterling price. Barham, (Ingoldsby) died 1845. This work was published (and presumably inscribed) just before publication of the Ingoldsby Legends. The two author's greatly admired each others work.‎

‎Edition originale illustrée de 32 planches dont 2 frontispices et 2 titres gravés par George Cruikshank, gravées à à l'aquatinte par Brooke, Rowlandson et peintes à la main (aquarellées). Première issue, sans la note de bas de page en page 9. La table des planches comptabilise bien 32 planches. 3 feuillets de musique. Reliure en demi veau cerise glacé à coins ca 1870. Dos à nerfs richement orné de feuilles et fleurs, roulettes en queue et tête. Pièce de titre de veau tabac, pièce de tomaison de veau vert sapin. Mors inférieurs des tomes 1 et 2 avec des fendillements et des frottements, mais les mors bien solides et homogènes. Un petit fragment de tête manquant au tome II. Bel exemplaire. Par bien des aspects, l'ouvrage est un guide de Londres, mais c'est également un roman satirique qui présente la vie à Londres au travers des aventures de 3 personnages, Tom Corinthian, Jerry Hawthorne et Bob Logic. Les trois compères visitent ainsi bien des endroits de Londres, leur perception étant victime de leur rang social. Real life in London est en fait une suite et une imitation de Life in London par Pierce Egan, dont on ne connait pas l'auteur. L'ouvrage, dans une veine comique, eut un grand succès populaire; beaucoup plus important que son modèle : Life in London. - Photos sur www.Edition-originale.com - ‎

‎Très célèbre caricature colorisée du grand Cruikshank (1792-1878) parue dans le Comic almanack and diary. Elle illustre à sa manière satirique les effets délétères de l'envoi en Australie de jeunes femmes anglaises à fin de fournir des compagnes à la surabondante population masculine de l'Australie, qui, depuis les années 1800, avait surtout reçu détenus et mauvais garçons dont l'Angleterre souhaitait se débarrasser. Donc, les jeunes filles épousables étant parties au loin, des négociants avisés font venir d'Australie et du Pacifique des cargaisons de jeunes indigènes : débarquées sur le quai, d'allure plus que fortement mélanésienne, aguichantes et provocatrices, elles suscitent l'immense stupeur - pour ne pas dire plus - d'un groupe de gentleman anglais à la fois pâles et guindés. ‎
