This book presents a vast array of objects patiently collected over the past few years from European private estates and collections for their rarity, superior craftsmanship, artistic value, historical significance, and as testimonies of transcultural relationships linking Lisbon to Europe and the wider world in the Age of Discovery. These objects help us to tell a story which has remained largely untold; that of princely collecting in Portugal in the early modern period, 1500-1800. There are many factors which have considerably hindered our knowledge of the art of collecting at the Lisbon court. The most important is the almost total disappearance of the objects themselves.
