‎La Clef du Cabinet des princes de l'Europe, ou Recueil historique & politique sur les matieres du tems. Vols. 1-18, 20-30, 32-38 (+) Supplement de la clef ou journal historique sur les matieres du tems. vol. 1-2. - [LUXEMBOURG'S FIRST NEWSPAPER]‎

‎(Luxembourg), Jacques le Sincere (and later:) Andre Chevalier, 1704 - 1723. 8vo. Bound almost uniformly in 38 contemporary full calf bindings with five raised bands and richly gilt spines. Paper-label pasted on to top of spines and ex-libris pasted on to pasted down front end-papers. Light wear to extremities, boards with scratches, occassionally with loss of leather, and spines with light miscolouring and occassional loss of the gilt ornamentation. Vol. 1-18, 20-30, 32-38 and the 2 supplement volumes (both 1713).‎

‎The exceedingly rare first edition of Luxembourg’s first newspaper, and periodical in general, which appeared for the first time in July 1704. It was then published monthly, without interruption, until July 1794. The early volumes of the journal are rarely found in trade and we have not been able to trace a single multiple-volume set with the supplement included. Behind the newspaper were initially the librarian, printer and journalist Claude Jordan (born around 1659) from Valence, and the printer André Chevalier (1660-1747), a Frenchman from Bourg-en-Bresse, who had a printing press in Luxembourg city. Jordan had previously published the Gazettes de Hollande in Leyden and Amsterdam. In 1704, the two joined forces to produce a newspaper from Luxembourg aimed at the Lorraine region (which was then independent of France) and the French market, following the model of the Gazettes de Hollande.‎

‎Erbauliche Abhandlung von der Demuth Welcher noch beygefuget sind: Einige Zeugnisse H. Schrift, Des frommen Thoma von Kempis Heilige Betrachtungen.‎

‎Leipzig & Wolfenbuttel, Meisner, 1729. 8vo. In a very nice contemporary Cambridge-style mirror binding with five raised bands and richly gilt spine. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Corners bumped. A very nice and clean copy. (10), 341, (50) pp. ‎

‎The rare first German translation of De la Mothe’s edifying treatise on humility and humbleness. Claude Grostete de la Mothe (1647–1713), ”theologian, was born at Orleans in 1647, and was the son of Jacques Grostête de la Buffière, a member of the Paris bar, and an elder of the protestant church at Charenton. He assumed, according to custom, the name of one of his father's estates. He graduated in law at Orleans University 1664, and in the following year joined the Paris bar but in 1676, having abandoned law for theology, he became protestant pastor at Lizy, near Melun. In 1682 he accepted a call to Rouen, but returned to Lizy on finding that no successor could be obtained, and was secretary of the provincial synod held there. On the revocation of the edict of Nantes in 1685, he sought refuge in London with his wife. Marie Berthe, daughter of a Paris banker, was naturalised in 1668, and was minister first of the Swallow Street, and then, from 1694 till his death, of the Savoy Church. In 1712 he was elected a member of the Berlin Royal Society in 1713 he collected subscriptions in England for the Huguenots released from the French galleys and he died in London 30 Sept. 1713. La Mothe's father abjured protestantism, and his brother, Marin des Mahis, an ex-pastor become a canon of Orleans. La Mothe published 'Two Discourses relating to the Divinity of our Saviour,' London, 1693, 'The Inspiration of the New Testament asserted and explained,' London, 1694, and several treatises in French, one of them in defence of the Camisard prophets.” (DNB).‎

‎Théorie des fonctions doublement périodiques et, en particulier, des fonctions elliptiques.‎

‎Paris, Mallet-Bachelier, 1859. 8vo. Contemporary half calf. XXIV,342 pp.‎

‎First edition of this important textbook on function theory. Charles Auguste Briot (1817-1882) was one of the most eminent teachers of his time. Already during his time in elementary school Briot had decided that he wanted to be a mathematics teacher. He entered the École Normale Supériure in 1838 were he was ranked second. Just three years later he received agrégation in mathematics with the highest rank. In March 1842 he received his doctorate of science, having presented his thesis on the movement of a solid body round a fixed point. Despite his marked academic success in research, Briot still wanted to follow his chosen career as a teacher. He first obtained a professorship at the Orléans Lycée and afterward at University of Lyons, where he re-encountered his school friend Jean-Claude Bouquet, with whom he collaborated throughout his career.During the years 1814-1831 Agustin Cauchy created the basic framework of complex function theory. The results obtained by Cauchy were, however, still only to be found throughout his numerous journal papers, and although Cauchy is known for having stimulated the development of mathematical rigor throughout the field, his own research papers often used intuitive, not rigorous, methods. The joint scientific work of Briot and Bouquet was a profound study and clarification of the analytic work of Cauchy. In a memoire that has remained famous since its publication in 1853, they proposed to establish precisely the conditions that a function must fulfill in order to be developable into an entire series. They also perfected the analysis by which Cauchy had, for the first time, established the existence of the integral of a differential equation. They opened the way to research on singular points and showed their importance for knowledge of the integral. All this work culminated in their extremely influential text book 'Théorie des fonctions doublement périodiques et, en particulier, des fonctions elliptiques'. This work played a decisive role in spreading Cauchy's methods and results to European mathematicians, and for a long time it remained the standard text of the French School. It was translated into German in 1862, and went through several editions. For his outstanding contributions to mathematics the Académie des Sciences in Paris awarded Briot their Poncelet Prize in 1882 shortly before he died.‎

Reference : 44119

(1863)

‎De l'Existence d'un nouveau Métal. le Thallium. (+) Rapport fait à l'Academie des Sciences sur un Mémoire de K. Lamy relatif au Thallium. Commisaires Pelouze, H. Sainte-Claire, Dumas rapporteur. (+ regnault:) Sur la Chaleur specifique de Thallium. ...‎

‎Paris, Victor Masson et Fils, Imprimerie Gauthier-Villars, 1863. Without wrappers. In ""Annales de Chimie et de Physique"", Troisieme Series - Tome 67, Cahier Avril. Titlepage to tome 68. Pp. 385- 512 pp. and 1 folded colour plate (Spectre solaire, Spectre Thallium, showing the green line). (The entire issue offered). The papers on Thallium: pp. 385-434. Smal, stamps on verso of titlepage. Lamy's paper: pp. 383-417.‎

‎William Crookes was the first to observe Thallium (1861) as he found a new green line in a selenium sample, but Lamy was the first to isolate it and to prove that it was a metal (1862). The paper offered is Lamy's full description of his discovery, a shorter announcement was published in ""Comptes rendus"", 23 June 1862.Claude-Auguste Lamy (1820-1878) examined some slime from a sulfuric acid plant at Loos which was using Belgian pyrite and observed the green spectral line. He extracted thallium sesquichloride and isolated the metal new by electrolysis. Only after his discovery, he found out that Crookes had earlier discovered and named the new element, and gave Crookes the honour. Crookes presumed that his Thallium was something of the order of Sulphur, Selenium or Tellurium but Lamy found it to be a metal. In April 1862 he reported to the French Académie des sciences. Reference : 45831

(1767)

‎Candide en Dannemarc ou l'optimisme des honnêtes-gens. - [CANDIDE IN DENMARK - WITH A SATIRE ON ROUSSEU]‎

‎Geneve, 1767. Original blue cardboard binding with contemporary handwritten paper title-label to spine. Pencil-numbering to inside of boards. A very nice and clean copy. Woodcut vignette to title-page. With the ex-libris of the notes Danish book collector K.F. Plesner to inside of front board.‎

‎Rare first edition of this interesting, anonymously written continuation of Voltaire's Candide, which wraps up the adventures of the hero. ""Turning his back on both Voltarian satire and scepticism, the novelist proposes a moralistic fable - the focal point of which is a rehabilitation of Leibniz's Theory of Optimism. The main body of the novel tells the story of Candide and his new wife, the noble Zénoïde, in their sumptuous Copenhagen townhouse. Before achieving this happy state, however, the couple endures various trials and tribulations reminiscent of the newly minted gothic genre. ""Candide au Dannemarc"" also features a satirical portrait of Jean-Jacques Rousseau."" (Éduard M. Langille, from the introduction to the new edition of ""Candide au Dannemarc"", edited by him). Voltaire's ""Candide"" had inspired a sequel that appeared in 1760, which is attributed to Charles-Claude-Florent de Campigneulles, but which might be by Henri-Joseph du Laurens. The present work is a direct continuation of that sequel (although it ignores the happy ending of the previous work), but evidently from the preface, it is not written by the same author. It has still not been determined who the actual author is.The part on Rousseau (pp. 148-167) in the present work has become quite famous, portraying him satirically as trying to make a living in Copenhagen from copying music while plotting to escape to America. The novel ends with Candide leaving Denmark to be the Danish ambassador in Russia.A secoond edition appeared in 1769.‎
