UK, British Museum Press, 2010 This sumptuously illustrated catalogue charts the history of drawing in Italy from 1400, just prior to the emergence in Florence of the classically inspired naturalism of the Renaissance style, to around 1510 when Michelangelo, Raphael and Titian were on the verge of taking the innovations of earlier masters, such as Leonardo and Pollaiuolo, in a new direction. The book highlights the key role played by drawing in artistic teaching and in how artists studied the human body and the natural world. Aspects of regional difference, the development of new drawing techniques and classes of graphic work, such as finished presentation pieces to impress patrons, are also explored. An extended introduction focusing on how and why artists made drawings, with a special emphasis on the pivotal role of Leonardo, is richly illustrated with examples from the two collections that elucidate the technique and function of the works. This is followed by catalogue entries for just over 100 drawings where discussion of their function and significance is supported by comparative illustrations of related works, such as paintings. . Summary For her commissioning and performance of a French vernacular version of the Arabic tale of the Thousand and One Nights - recorded in one of the most vivid and sumptuous extant late thirteenth-century manuscripts - as well as for her numerous other commissions, Queen Marie of Brabant (1260-1321) was heralded as an intellectual and literary patron comparable to Alexander the Great and Charlemagne. Nevertheless, classic studies of the late medieval period understate Marie's connection to the contemporary rise of secular interests at the French court. Pleasure and Politics seeks to reshape that conversation by illustrating how the historical and material record reveals the queen's essential contributions to the burgeoning court. This emerging importance of the secular and redefinition of the sacred during the last decades of Capetian rule becomes all the more striking when juxtaposed to the pious tone of the lengthy reign of Louis IX (1214-1270), which had ended just four years before Marie's marriage to his son. That Marie often chose innovative materials and iconographies for these objects - ones that would later in the fourteenth century become the norm - signals her impact on late medieval patronage. Pleasure and Politics examines Marie's life beginning with her youth in Brabant, to her entry into Paris in 1274 accompanied by her retinue of courtiers, artists, objects, and ideas from the northern courts of Brabant, Flanders, and Artois. It continues with her elaborate coronation held for the first time in the Sainte-Chapelle the following year, her years as queen of France - often full of intrigue - and her long, productive widowhood, until her death and burial in 1321. With a focus on her Brabantine and Carolingian heritage joined to her status as French queen - often expressed through pioneering styles of heraldry - her commissions included ceremonies, marriage treaties, and intercessions, as well as a stunning collection of jewels, seals, manuscripts, reliquaries, sculpture, stained glass, and architecture that she gathered and built around her. This study also reveals Marie's regular collaboration with family, friends, and artists, in particular that with the poet Adenet le Roi, women of the French court like Blanche of France (1252-1320), and relatives from the north like Robert of Artois (1250-1302). With this broader view, it also analyzes the dynamics of Marie's patronage and its impact on contemporary and future women and men of the royal house. Court, culture, politics, and gender - these are the themes that flow throughout Marie of Brabant's life and tie together the material effects of a long, pleasure-filled existence enlivened by the politics of Europe on the cusp of a new age. An interdisciplinary contribution to the latest scholarship on Wyclif, Wycliffism, and lollardy. The philosophical and theological ideas of John Wyclif, their dissemination among clerical and lay audiences, and the movement of religious dissent associated with his name all provoked sharp controversies in late medieval England. This volume brings together the very latest scholarship on Wyclif and Wycliffism, with its contributors exploring in interdisciplinary fashion the historical, literary, and theological resonances of the Wycliffite controversies. Far from adhering to the traditional binary divide between ?orthodoxy? and ?heresy? as a tool for explaining the religious turmoil of the late fourteenth, fifteenth, and early sixteenth centuries, essays here explore the construction and rhetorical use of those terms, collectively producing a more nuanced account of the religious history of pre-Reformation England. Topics include the use of religious lyrics and tables of lessons as indirect rebuttals of Wycliffite claims; the social networks through which dissenters transmitted their ideas; dissenting and mainstream readings of Scripture; the ?survival? of Wycliffism in the run-up to Henry VIII's reformation; and the fate of Wyclif and Wycliffism in later historiography. Leading contributors include Anne Hudson, Alastair Minnis, and Peter Marshall. Languages : English.

One of the most popular painters of the Golden Age, known for his ironic and humorous view of the world. He is most appreciated for his comical portrayals of dilapidated households, quacks examining miniaturized girls, noisy open-air parties and pub scenes. However, Steen also painted genre pieces with a serious side, some highly original portraits and particularly interesting history pieces that vary widely in style and atmosphere, from the quiet and intimate to the large and melodramatic.

Anish Kapoor Painting is the first publication to explore Kapoor's paintings in depth. It offers a unique insight into a language that has increasingly been a focus over the last ten years but has also been an integral part of his studio practice since his career began in the late seventies. In works that sit in the cusp between abstraction and figuration, Kapoor's paintings reveal the desire to go beyond the surface that has been so iconically explored in his better-known sculptural works. Recurring motifs are returned to time and again, rendered in paintings in which image, surface, space and time appear in sometimes delicate but often violent symmetry.

Provenance : James Ronalds, London (ex-libris manuscrit) et « Institution of Naval Architects, Scott Library Collection, 1930 (étiquette imprimée). 1 vol. 4to. 20 fold. Plates + 40 ff. manuscripts inserted at the beginning and at the end of the text, with diagrams, entitled "Carlsunds Elucidation of Chapmas, Parabolic System". Contemp. sheep. French edition translated from the Swedish, of one of the most famous naval architecture treatises produced in the 18th century. Copy with 80 pages of notes and handwritten addendum diagrams in English. In the 18th century, naval architecture is the equivalent of what will be the 20th aerospace industry. However, in 1750 it remains an empirical art based on the knowledge and the eye of some exceptional master carpenters: most military and merchant ships are built without a specific plan, based on simple sketches and arsenal models. Duhamel Du Monceau's work "Elements darchitecture navale" published in 1752, is a revolution. It addresses shipbuilding for the first time in a scientific way and accessible to all. From then, the civil and military shipyards adopt a rational work based on the physical and mathematical sciences and perfectly established plans. This work by Sweden Frederick Henry of Chapman, (1721-1808) appeared for the first time in 1775. Translated into several languages, he will not know an edition in English until 1820 (Smith, Cambridge). This French edition is due to Sébastien Vial de Clairbois, (1733-1816), naval engineer and a naval historian, who adds his own notes. This treatise is the work of a sailor who knew perfectly the construction of the vessels. Frederic Chapman was born in Gothenburg, the great Swedish port of the North Sea. At the age of 15, he left for Stockholm to learn the art of shipbuilding. With a partner he opened a shipyard in Gothenburg from 1744. This did not prevent him from traveling a lot and even being briefly arrested in 1741, when he visited an English shipyard without authorization. In 1750 he took the mathematics classes of English Thomas Simpson (1710-1761). He will thus use Simpson's method (numerical calculation of an integral) to determine mathematically the different characteristics of a ship (volumes, surfaces, center of gravity ...). In 1757, he took the charge of the Swedish royal shipyards for King Gustav III (1771-1792). He was then relieving the Swedish fleet, which had fallen somewhat into decay. He built a total of 24 ships. Appointed Vice Admiral in 1791, he ceased his activity in 1793, when he was 72 years old. The work is divided into IX chapters dealing with every aspect of the construction: displacement, stability, center of gravity, resistance, sails, proportions of buildings and rigging, and construction practice. It is illustrated with 8 out-of-text tables and 11 out-of-text plates, including 3 folding cutaway schematics. Copy used by a British construction site: it is riddled with forty sheets of manuscripts in ink of additions and notes, diagrams, tables of calculation as well as annotations in the margins, all written in English . Provenance: James Ronalds, London (ex libris manuscript) and "Institution of Naval Architects, Scott Library Collection, 1930 (printed label). Thus, while an English edition was available from 1820, some British architects continued to use the present copy and supplemented it with large manuscript additions.
